    Product Manager Interview

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Yousician (New York, NY) in June 2018.

    Interview

I was interviewing for a product manager position at Yousician, to help build out the New York office. The entire process was very speedy, and my primary point of contact (the in-house technical recruiter at Yousician) was extremely responsive, moved things forward quickly, and kept in very close communication with me regarding status and feedback. He was very respectful of my time, and I appreciated the frequent check-ins and status updates.

    The process:

    1) Initial 45-min phone screen with in-house recruiter. This went quite in-depth regarding my relevant experience for the position. At the end of the call, I was offered the opportunity to do advance to the next round.

    2) Take-home assignment with an interesting prompt that was relevant to the position. I spent about 3-4 hours on this. Turnaround time was very quick - I received a call later that day from the recruiter letting me know that the team wanted to advance me to the next round.

    3) In-person round. As the product team is currently mostly based in Helsinki, the "in-person" rounds were done via video call. I had 2 one-hour rounds with fairly senior members of the product team. The first was focused mainly on strategy and discussing the take-home assignment. The second was mostly behavioral. All the questions asked were pretty tough and required a lot of careful thought to answer, so I was very impressed with the team. Very nice people though.

    4) Video call with CEO, Chris. This seemed to be more of a formality, but it was a good step in the process and helped answer a lot of questions around the company's mission/ vision/ origin. Great individual, clearly a visionary leader.

    5) Video call with hiring manager. As the hiring manager was on vacation for most of my interview process, this step came last. It would have been nice to have spoken with him earlier in the process, but they did a good job with coordinating around my and his schedules. Very pleasant individual.

Overall a good experience, rigorous process. Very quick turnaround, especially for a product job. Probably would have gone even faster if people hadn't been on vacation and we had to schedule around that.
