I worked at Youth for Understanding (More than 3 years)

    Pros

One of the greatest benefits is to be given the opportunity to make a real positive impact on teenagers all over the world. Many of these youth will end up being leaders in the near future and we are giving them a taste of what living globally is all about.

    Cons

As a Field Director, the only con would be the extreme overtime that you put tv in every summer to assure everyone finds has a home go to.

    Advice to Management

Offer as much support as possible prior to these placement seasons and then support staff need to continue to support Field Director's until placement goals are met.

    Application

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Youth for Understanding (Bethesda, MD) in October 2013.

    Interview

YFU does active recruiting at American University for interns. There are paid and non-paid internships. If you go to the internship fair at YFU they give you e-mail addresses for the specific supervisor you would be working on and your application goes to them rather than thru the YFU website. Bring a resume.

    Interview Questions

    • How do you feel you personally connect with YFU's mission?   1 Answer

    Negotiation

Negotiations are limited because there is a limited budget, like many non-profits. Standard offer is $10/hour for a max of 15 hours/week.
