Change can be difficult, and the past year has been rough. But, despite that, I am really excited about this opportunity. I joined Zenefits because I believe this company can be an innovative and disruptive force in the industry - and is poised to make a huge impact.
What a rare opportunity.
The best days for Zenefits are ahead of us. Our mission is powerful and inspirational. Enabling small and medium sized businesses - the economic engine of the entire US economy – to grow and succeed is a noble purpose. It should propel us every day and drive us to do our best work. What we do matters. We’re fortunate to work for a company that is capable of making a real difference. Trust me, opportunities like this do not come around very often. That’s why I was excited to jump in with both feet and I am thrilled to be here.
So, a bit about me and what fuels my enthusiasm for the journey ahead…
Having been a CEO twice before, I know this job is intense and requires my full attention...and I’m all in. I love leading a team and building something that is worthy of our time and reputation. I love to win and it drives my passion for building great companies. I’m lucky to have a great family that helps support my passion. When I am not working, I am an avid outdoorsman (horses, fly fishing, skiing, hiking, outdoor adventures, travel, etc.). I play golf but can’t seem to get my handicap any lower, so having a new job will be a huge relief.
Next, building and sustaining a great company culture is important to me. In my experience, culture trumps strategy every time. I define culture simply as “how we do things here”. As I get to know Zenefits better we’ll quickly build a culture of trust, transparency, and execution. We will work together to add these core values to how things already work at Zenefits, and make these values come to life every day as they guide our decisions and how we operate.
I am committed to making Zenefits a great place to work. I am committed to operating with integrity – every day and in every situation. I am committed to putting our customers first. Every company I have been a part of has been known for outrageous (in a good way) customer service. We will be, too, and it will be fundamental to why we win. Engineers at Zenefits are constantly shipping creative solutions to some of the most challenging problems in the tech industry. We have deeply ingrained cultural values that make this possible:
Autonomy. Our engineers enjoy an unprecedented amount of ownership of the products they work on -- making decisions about when and where to optimize, collaborating closely with product managers to spec out features, and working at the boundaries of products to ensure they work well together. The hardest problem of a startup is deciding what to work on, and in what order, and we trust our engineers to do the right thing for our customers when we’re making these decisions.
Continuous improvement. We work constantly to improve the product for our customers, and the codebase for our fellow engineers. We believe in shipping features quickly and iteratively, but HR systems require integrity, and we expect engineers at Zenefits to build that into every feature, and every line of code they ship. "Leave things better than you found them" is one of our foundational principles.
Collaboration. Humans are complicated, and so is HR software. Complicated software problems are solved by awesome teams of people, not by an individual hero coder. Engineers at Zenefits work in small, cross-functional teams who collaborate across disciplines and organizational boundaries using tools like Slack, e-mail, GitHub, Confluence, and Jira. We keep communication flowing constantly, so we can craft unified, intuitive solutions to the complex interlocking problems of HR.

ZeneWomen is our most active interest group at Zenefits! We are a group that is interested in female empowerment in the workplace . Our events are centered around three pillars of education, mentorship and community, with the goal of enriching the lives of our members. As a group, we rally to give back to the community, attend seminars and meet weekly for lunch to discuss current events and other ways to enhance our community - all are welcome to join us!

I have been working at Zenefits full-time (More than a year)
- Jay is an incredibly transparent CEO, which is important to me in a leader. His standing desk is central and makes him very accessible; anyone can talk to him about the company or ask questions.
- The vibe is incredibly progressive, inclusive, and makes coming to work really fun. We have meaningful discussions about hot topics to ensure we're ourselves actively improving our internal people management.
- Learning and growth fostered and encouraged. I've moved into many different roles at Zenefits based on my interests, and have had unlimited personal and professional growth opportunities.
I've been here for a long time and have seen management and the business change. I can say 100% these changes have been for the better and I LOVE working here now.
I would have said a month ago that it's difficult to keep up with the new faces as we hire new employees, but recently Zenefits started doing happy hours to welcome each new class and that's no longer an issue.
Advice to Management
Keep up the transparency into company goals and obstacles!
I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Zenefits in January 2018.
First interview was behavioral and very laid-back; We video-chatted on google hangouts for about 30 minutes. The interviewer asked me about my courses and what projects I've done and allowed me to ask questions back.
Second interview was technical, I was expecting a much tougher question than I received so it threw me off at first. This interview was an hourlong. Overall it went well
