Mission: To be the most trusted service to medical caregivers, helping them do well by doing the right thing.
We have a 20-year history of hiring super ambitious, genuinely friendly, slightly weird, 'wicked' smart (we're headquarted in Boston) people. And now, our 5000+ strong team of athenistas, located in offices around the country and in India, are working diligently to unbreak a system that is inherently damaged.
We know healthcare is broken because that's how athenahealth began. In 1997, co-founders Jonathan Bush and Todd Park ran a birthing center in California, where they found themselves inundated with paperwork, and spending the bulk of their time just trying to get paid, rather than actually helping patients deliver healthy babies.
When they couldn't find a solution to this burden (the paperwork, not the babies), they developed their own. The result: The cloud-based services now offered by athenahealth. Boom.
Our vision was birthed at the birthing center, itself: to be the health information backbone for the entire nation. So here we go!
Health care is plagued with inefficiencies that can jeopardize quality care. Doctors spend mere minutes with patients, often separated by a computer screen, doctors spend more time checking payment status than your vital signs, and important health records are not shared between providers. We strive to address that by enabling the easier flow of patient information, and taking on the administrative burden so the doctors don't have to. Our open technology platform supports further improvement by inviting disruptive innovation and encouraging partners to join in our mission. With inventive tools and services, everyone within healthcare can benefit.
how we work
United by a passion for our mission to heal healthcare, and driven by the force of our collective potential, work at athenahealth is fast-paced, collaborative, data-driven—and above all—it inspires us. As we've grown from a start-up to a nation-wide healthcare IT solution, we strive to perfect our products and services. And we're always working to bring partnerships with clients to the next level.
We believe in a spirit of unconditional positive regard for each other—and while we strive to become caregivers’ most trusted support system, that goes double for our colleagues. athenahealth is proud of its four Employee Resource Groups that are focused on creating an inclusive, diverse and dynamic workplace: the athenaDiversity Council, athenaParents, athenaProud, and the Women’s Leadership Forum (WLF).
athenahealth was launched with a disruptive, entrepreneurial spirit. It’s important to us to preserve that culture, even as we grow as an organization. We offer so much more than competitive benefits—at athenahealth, we enjoy engaged and vocal colleagues, creative workspaces, food trucks, lawn games, a casual dress code, discounted gym memberships, and more. Plus, all employees are bonus eligible.
Activities may vary by location.
Corporate Responsibility has been baked into our DNA from the start. Here at athenahealth, we’ve always been focused on our health care providers, helping them do well by doing the right thing.
Our Corporate Responsibility program, athenaGives, goes above and beyond, working to improve the health of underserved, uninsured, and/or at-risk populations. We offer cash grants to innovative health nonprofits working in our local communities, support local nonprofits at which employees donate time, and maximize our social impact by leveraging our network enabled services beyond the traditional client base. We’re working across our networks and in our local communities to transform healthcare.
At athenahealth, we are dedicated to making sure our workplaces are as comfortable and productive as possible for our employees. In fact, we have a whole team dedicated to just that called athenaEnvironment. Most of our office building are restored buildings which we have made our own like the Arsenal Building in Watertown and the Seaholm Power Plant in Austin, TX. We make sure the place that you work is a place you want to be. Check out our locations below to learn more.

Company is navigating transitions so naturally there are some communication and turnover challenges
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at athenahealth (Watertown, MA) in April 2018.
Phone screen, Phone technical interview over Hackerrank, then on-site interview with 2 technical interviews (1.5 hours where you work through a coding problem with them on your laptop -- not whiteboard coding). Aside from that, there's a lunch with a senior staff member, and a more behavioral type interview where they ask you about stuff on your resume.
Really smooth and streamlined process, best of all the companies I interviewed with! They were very accommodating of my job search timing and were flexible with extra time to decide on their offer.
