We have a 20-year history of hiring super ambitious, genuinely friendly, slightly weird, 'wicked' smart (we're headquarted in Boston) people. And now, our 5000+ strong team of athenistas, located in offices around the country and in India, are working diligently to unbreak a system that is inherently damaged.
We know healthcare is broken because that's how athenahealth began. In 1997, co-founders Jonathan Bush and Todd Park ran a birthing center in California, where they found themselves inundated with paperwork, and spending the bulk of their time just trying to get paid, rather than actually helping patients deliver healthy babies.
When they couldn't find a solution to this burden (the paperwork, not the babies), they developed their own. The result: The cloud-based services now offered by athenahealth. Boom.
Our vision was birthed at the birthing center, itself: to be the health information backbone for the entire nation. So here we go!
Health care is plagued with inefficiencies that can jeopardize quality care. Doctors spend mere minutes with patients, often separated by a computer screen, doctors spend more time checking payment status than your vital signs, and important health records are not shared between providers. We strive to address that by enabling the easier flow of patient information, and taking on the administrative burden so the doctors don't have to. Our open technology platform supports further improvement by inviting disruptive innovation and encouraging partners to join in our mission. With inventive tools and services, everyone within healthcare can benefit.

Our Corporate Responsibility program, athenaGives, goes above and beyond, working to improve the health of underserved, uninsured, and/or at-risk populations. We offer cash grants to innovative health nonprofits working in our local communities, support local nonprofits at which employees donate time, and maximize our social impact by leveraging our network enabled services beyond the traditional client base. We’re working across our networks and in our local communities to transform healthcare.

Tough few months saying goodbye to some good people, but ultimately was the right thing to do for the business.
Advice to Management
Get back to focusing on our services and advancing there. While platform is important, satisfying the clients/prospects will have huge revenue impacts that will allow us to make the platform changes. Get back to the roots of listening the clients, evaluating their challenges, and fixing them with our services. That's where athena used to shine.
I applied online. I interviewed at athenahealth.
I was contacted by a recruiter for a phone interview. It went well and she was very enthusiastic. She said she would speak with the hiring manager about scheduling a date for me to come in for an in-person interview. After several days I reached out to her by email, only to be told that another recruiter was taking over the job and I should reach out to her. I reached out several times, but she never returned my emails. Very disappointed in how it was handled.
