I have been working at bluebird bio full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Patients are top-of-mind and how the work we're doing supports patients is brought into everyday conversations, in all parts of the company. Coworkers are friendly, funny, smart, and want to help you succeed. Leaders are inspiring, authentic, and approachable. They act like real people without the layers of corporate sheen. The culture is supportive and congenial - we have a company band, a bunch of different ERGs, potlucks, sports teams, book clubs, board game clubs, a talent show, and so much more. It's really something that I have never experienced before.

    Cons

Workload is intense. Your expectation should not be a 40-hour work week. I work about 55-60 hours/week and could still do more if it weren't for my intentional pullback and mindfulness around how much I can give without burning out.

    Advice to Management

The need for more people is high - don't compromise on who we bring in because of this though. It's better to pass on an iffy candidate than it is to bring in someone who doesn't align to our values, culture, and mission.

    Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at bluebird bio (Cambridge, MA) in February 2017.

    Interview

I had a phone interview with the HR recruiter to discuss the position and answer any questions about the role. I was asked to provide availability for an in-person interview, which consisted of meeting with ~7 people (team members, hiring manager, and cross-functional contacts) for 30-minute segments each. I was then asked to come back in to meet with one final person who was out of the office for my interview the week prior.

    Interview Questions

    • Describe your previous work experience and how it relates to the role.   Answer Question
    • Why are you interested in joining bluebird/biotech?   Answer Question
