I lost all respect for Google after these layoffs and the way they handled it. Absolutely unexpected. How much does consulting business come from Google?

A lot. More than enough for us to turn a blind eye 😂

Eh. Some good people certainly got hurt (and I don’t necessarily agree with the notification process) - but I also saw something about how they laid off like 30 massage therapists; the bloating & excess at that company seems to have been absolutely unreal. I’m sure I’ll get backlash from this, but I also know some INSANELY entitled Googlers. Never have I seen folks be so “dramatic” about layoffs all over LinkedIn; welcome back to reality, my friends… Your $500k / 30 hour work weeks weren’t sustainable.

I applied to 3 roles at Google last week, and got standard confirmation emails with subject “thanks for applying to Google!”. Today, I got an email with subject “thanks for your interest in Google!” that said they’d reach out soon about next steps. Is this something to see as positive, or a fluke in the automated emails? I can’t answer definitively but usually they don’t respond at all after the the first auto email after application. So could be a good thing? There recruiting process is a bit frustrating.

This is a generic email they send to all applicants, it’s just a neutral indicator.

Leave as a VP or SVP from a non “like company” (Microsoft, apple, oracle, or as of late.. consulting). Like companies usually transfer pretty well. Be here for 15+ years in the right business unit Have friends above you.

Hi so got the verbal offer for Google for an L4 but I’m asked to give the first number of what I want for TC, I looked at levels.fyi and I see the average is 275k but I see as high as 388k, would it be ok to start with 350k and then work my way down? Or is that too absurd? Also, how do the RSUs work?

As a SWE? What location? RSUs- you’re granted a dollar amount and when you start they’re converted to a number based on the stock price the month before. They vest over 4 years- 33/33/22/11. Annual, end of year refreshers make up for that decreased amount on year 3/4. The cadence of vesting (monthly, quarterly, semi annual) depends on number of units granted

The 388k is 100% from stock appreciation so it’s not likely. However always start high without being ridiculous and take it from there. How many YOE do you have? Google is notorious for down-leveling so be aware of that.

Google is on a hiring freeze. If that’s the case, then I am confused how come people on LinkedIn keeps saying they just got hurried by Google. Can someone from Google tell us if it’s an hiring freeze or just a way to get us from applying right now. I am very lost if I should apply or stop.

Have not seen anything about a hiring freeze. Definitely slowing down but new people being onboarded daily.

Hard to say without context but hiring freeze can also mean net new positions, as in backfilling roles continues but the budgeted headcount is not going to change/increase.

What makes a PM stand out on a resume for Google? I dont have any big name companies on my resume like google. Im okay even starting at a lower PM level i just cant seem to get my foot in. Not even passed the screening portion. I have been in Product roles for 10 years and i truly know my stuff. I am always getting promoted multiple times at every company. But google is my dream but seems so unattainable. Any advice?

0-1 product launch will make you stand out. Perhaps you’re not a good fit(skill-wise) for google just yet? The fact that you are willing to start at a lower PM role tells me your 10 year tenure in product was more of a hybrid role than a pure product management experience. Try networking, that always helps, PM at big tech like google is very competitive. Alternatively you could pivot to consulting, i’m thinking bcg, deloitte, accenture, specialize in product management and implementation, then switch back to big tech. If google is your dream, you can certainly put extra effort to get in, it’s not unattainable, just really hard. Up skilling and networking will get you there, with some luck.

What you should do is look at Google’s career page and search for product manager roles. Read the qualifications and job description. Those will be the exact things you need to know and have experience in to get in. To get noticed and contacted, you need to tailor your resume exactly to match the job qualifications so they can tell right away you have the skills they are looking for. That’ll do it!
