I have been working at 1199SEIU Funds full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great healthcare benefits (full-coverage), child care, pension and tuition-reimbursement benefits. Also a great place of work for people who lack ambition and dont aspire to attain professional growth and development, find no need to question the status-quo and have no desire to contribute toor change an organizational culture that prohibits the "employee voice" unless you are one of the preferred employees.

    Cons

Lack of organizational transparency, departments work in silos, inconsistent forms of communication, dont practice what they preach, lack of an effective on-boarding process, lack of clear work expectations, managers act more like tyrants than leaders, organizational culture resists change, complacency is the norm and lack an accountability structure.

    Advice to Management

Leave your egos at the door, listen more and demand less, be concerned with the growth and development of your staff, admit your faults and when you don't know things--you're human and your staff will appreciate transparency. Follow-up on anything you commit to doing, hold your staff and yourself accountable, make sure that you are practicing what you preach and exibiting the behaviors that your expect from your staff. Be PROFESSIONAL. Its not what you ask for, but how you ask--watch your tone.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Benefits are top-notch. I also love their mission: which is to fight for wage parity in the healthcare system.

    Cons

1199SEIU is by far the worst company I've ever worked for. It's a very hidebound and bureaucratic organization, so if you don't enjoy someone constantly standing over your shoulders pointing out every minute, insignificant detail that no one cares about, best if you find employment elsewhere. Management is utterly clueless and you'll receive little-to-no training.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees like humans and while you're at it, get a clue.

I worked at 1199SEIU Funds full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The pros: there is a union within a union (union representation) and it's located in times square so it's very accessible by many subway and bus lines.

    Cons

It's hard to advance within the company since it goes by seniority instead of test scores. The management there (depending on what department you go to) is a joke and trying to speak to someone (other than the receptionist) is impossible. I've sent several emails to HR personnel and to this day I still haven't received a response. In non-bargaining positions that are not under the union is also hard to get into because usually they already have someone in mind when the create the positon.

    Advice to Management

Better train your staff and actually provide service from the heart to both members that work IN the fund as well as for the fund.

I have been working at 1199SEIU Funds full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Health Benefits are great-probably the best in the Nation. Tuition Reimbursement is so-so. Not full, only 50%. Flex time is great. 15 minutes to flex.

    Cons

Management is uneducated and promoted based on friendships while good workers get passed over. Management is usually extremely intimated of their good workers so instead of supporting for promotions, management nit pick.

    Advice to Management

Go back to school, and learn how to manage-You can manage and be besties. ;(
