I have been working at 1199SEIU Funds full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent Medical, Dental and Pension benefits. Also, great benefits if you have children such as daycare, day camp, sleep away camp, camp programs for Christmas and Easter vacations at a very reasonable rate.

    Cons

Extremely political environment with a biased towards a certain gender specific and race for advancing to higher positions. It's not what you know it's who you know and how good you are at brown nosing.

    Advice to Management

Distinguish who is an asset and foster those members by mentoring to reach higher goals and objectives. Promote staff by their work ethic and education. I have seen too many people get promoted who really didn't deserve the opportunity and have seen good hardworking people stay in the same position for 10 plus years because they refuse to brown nose upper management. Give everyone a chance in advancing that is qualified and has proven to be a leader not just a certain gender and race.

I worked at 1199SEIU Funds full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Structured hours 9-5. Limited work load. Everything else is flexible. Good time off good sick and late policies. You can wear almost anything you want as long as you're under the radar. And do your work.

    Cons

Little options to move up in company. Whatever options do exist are about 6% higher pay for a lot more work. It's a good job if you don't have a degree and can't find work in the open market. Everyone is content and institutionalized.

    Advice to Management

Fire everyone and hire only college grads who can figure out on their own how to work a printer.

I have been working at 1199SEIU Funds full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great healthcare benefits (full-coverage), child care, pension and tuition-reimbursement benefits. Also a great place of work for people who lack ambition and dont aspire to attain professional growth and development, find no need to question the status-quo and have no desire to contribute toor change an organizational culture that prohibits the "employee voice" unless you are one of the preferred employees.

    Cons

Lack of organizational transparency, departments work in silos, inconsistent forms of communication, dont practice what they preach, lack of an effective on-boarding process, lack of clear work expectations, managers act more like tyrants than leaders, organizational culture resists change, complacency is the norm and lack an accountability structure.

    Advice to Management

Leave your egos at the door, listen more and demand less, be concerned with the growth and development of your staff, admit your faults and when you don't know things--you're human and your staff will appreciate transparency. Follow-up on anything you commit to doing, hold your staff and yourself accountable, make sure that you are practicing what you preach and exibiting the behaviors that your expect from your staff. Be PROFESSIONAL. Its not what you ask for, but how you ask--watch your tone.
