I worked at 2U full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Having worked at 2U for 6 and a half years, I can honestly say choosing them as a place to build my career was one of the best decisions I made. Main pros: Brilliant and hard working group of people Challenges you on a personal and professional level Culture is undeniably incredible and tough to find 2U invests in its people and even more when you invest in yourself at 2U CEO and leadership has worked hard... to develop a mission very easy to get behind and feel rewarded

    Cons

Can be tough to manage work life balance for some but is encouraged and important The work can be tough on a day to day so leaning on your team and coworkers and environment is important

I worked at 2U full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The pros I experienced occurred before the stock drop and the massive layoff (and consequent lack of transparency).

    Cons

At a recent department-wide meeting, the white man who runs the department told the hundreds of people who report to him that he doesn't think before he speaks and that they must assume he has good intent. In this same meeting, he said that he hadn't noticed that the recent layoff and re-org had left only one person of color in leadership from the director level upwards, but he hasn't seen a problem with it so far.... Wow! Impact over intent is the basic principle of DEI, and making these statements publicly, especially as a person of privilege, is alarming. 2U should pay attention to training their senior leadership in DEI and emotional intelligence, but if relying on outside resources, should not employ the same consulting group that they used to re-org the staff, as this group failed to account for the importance of diversity when recommending its cuts.

    Advice to Management

Your students and school partners will only be hurt if you do not address diversity and EQ issues in your senior staff.

I worked at 2U full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The people surrounding you every day, the work-life balance, the benefits, paid parental leave

    Cons

Quick advancement without training causing animosity among a younger working staff. Hush-Hush at the top despite guiding principle of being candid, open and honest. Lack of support from key stakeholders when things really got touch. School partnerships strained by off-target enrollment goals. Finance department creating goals for admissions teams when they are so out of touch of what is actually happening in the... program space. Lay-offs of all admissions directors back in September without notice or warning, and a lack of communication provided to the members on those teams.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at 2U full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The people, good culture, great gym in the MD HQ with free classes.

    Cons

Lack of proper training for leadership, especially since the layoffs which wiped out their most tenured staff and left many first time managers in charge of very complex teams without additional pay.

    Advice to Management

The executive leadership team needs to rebuild the company's business model, which recently suffered from the strain of competitors and a shifting market. They should adhere to their own motto of being "candid, open, and honest" and provide as much transparency to their employees as possible in order to keep the culture intact.

I have been working at 2U full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Snacks, nice building, free parking, so many people with the same lifestyle, which is my not my upbringing and too many young people. This company is run by people who bully others and make you think like they do or they get rid of you. This company was so wonderful when it was called 2tor. I miss the original company.

    Cons

Too many same type of people work here: Almost all are upper east coast from rich families and connected people. Almost all the people think the same way, far left minded buzz feed millenials. Our CEO is a great guy and personality wise nice too, but the others are are all tools. I wish our US president could set them straight. Not enough people who are in their late 20's, 30's, or higher.

    Advice to Management

Stop hiring your friends and managers need to stop sleeping around with your employees, stop hiring your RICH friends who do no real work at all and stop nepotism. Also, please stop Salesforce manipulations to get rid of people who don't think like you and are not YES men/women. STOP conducting fake interviews for promotions, when you know who you are going to promote and we know what you are doing.... Replace bad people, company needs to clean up the cesspool and drain the swamp.

I have been working at 2U full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    A. Benefits are ok but nothing great. The company acts like they are Google, but our benefits are no better than my old HMO. B. Free snacks, sodas and coffee for us workers and epples and benenes for the hipster, liberal arts degree earning, democratic siding, lazy, beard wearing men and simpleton women. C. Lots of Beckys for us few 'brothas' that dig pale faces in this side of PG County which is a 90% black area.... But they don't hire too many of us 'brothas' anyway. Good thing there is a UPS down the street that does not discriminate. And BTW most of the 'brothas' here at 2U aren't into sistas either, you catch my drift. D. Better jobs than working here at 2U: Portable Toilet Cleaner, Road Kill Remover, Janitor at a P@rno Theater, Manure Inspector, etc.

    Cons

    A. Cultish mentality; this job is a joke. B. Lots of problems which no one is talking about and lots of cliques. C. Silo'ed as can be, one hand doesn't know what the other is doing, friends are only hired D. Inexperienced people leading the charge, instead of seasoned pros E. Just saw review of another poster here on Glassdoor about the Wolf of Wall Street analogy. I just watched that movie recently and wow......that is exactly 2U! F. 2U was always known to the few older people (30+) that are still here as the Boiler Room liked the movie with Vin Diesel and Giovanni Ribisi.. G. Nepotism is a big problem across the board at this company. HR claims to have "listened" and put new processes in place to prevent this, but it still happens. Then they hold fake hiring charades for promotions or management when they already know who they are going to promote (their friend).

    Advice to Management

Do 2U write fake reviews on Glassdoor? Absolutely. Just look for yourself at the tone of the reviews following a 1-star negative review (most of the time they sound like rants). There's usually a mini-flood of only 5-star reviews with "Cons" of "it's really fast-paced!" The benefit for the reader of the reviews (most of the time, a potential job applicant) is that it's incredibly simple to spot the fake... reviews.
