I worked at 3D Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Coworkers were the best. Leaders were trusting and supportive before the merging. Used to focus on efficiency and willing to test out new ideas.

    Cons

Terrible health benefit. Experienced big shakeup during and after merging. All the outstanding coworkers left. Board named new executives were horrible.

I worked at 3D Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Getting to understand the technology behind 3D printing and how it works. The salary offered for the role was competitive.

    Cons

TO much management. When the new CEO came in he was going to re-structure that.... that seemed to have been done with to much new management. Give recognition to the hard working employees that support the product/infrastructure. It seems that some teams run to lean causing to much work and a breakdown in processes/procedures. There was no chance to move up or advance. Lots of negativity and the simple "hi" to people walking by in the hallways was hard to get.

    Advice to Management

It seems that the new CEO is trying to bring in the right people, however there is way to much upper management/director positions being filled. Hire workers that support all those users and give those users that support the office the bandwidth to help take care of the users within those offices. Lots of users that I came in contact with had said there were not enough support people to support ALL the people.

    I worked at 3D Systems full-time

    Pros

Great people work there, as long as you're not the executive management. It was once like family, but no longer. Cool technology and cutting edge.

    Cons

Execs too interested in playing the game of RISK, buying everything related to 3DS but not fixing the internal problems, which happens to be the infrastructure of the company. Stocks tumbled from once high of $90+ down to under $10 now.

    Advice to Management

Thank God the Board finally got rid of CEO, but at what cost?? A LOT too late in most opinion. He ran the company into the ground and ran off with a fat severance. Good luck to the next CEO. You'll need it.

I have been working at 3D Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A decent first job out of college. Work atmosphere is very collaborative and social between co-workers. Work is very unique and innovative for the industry.

    Cons

Tasks becomes repetitive quickly. Upper management is lacking in commitment to its team and goals. Job has no in depth engineering, and pay rate based on degree. Salaried positions expected to contribute 60+ hrs 4-5 mo of the year without compensation. Upper management has been unwilling to work toward valid solutions, resulting in high attrition of senior employees

    Advice to Management

Incentivise employees with better pay and work/life balance with appropriate staffing during peak seasons. Practice what you preach.

I have been working at 3D Systems full-time

    Pros

Fantastic people in the Andover location from the Z-Corp acquisition. Great technology and fun work. No other company has the breath and depth of technologies available. Engineering is typically very well supported and the managers are top notch. Andover has its own culture and enjoys a good work life balance.

    Cons

Other offices including the corporate one have a very different culture that is less fun. Longer hours and more conflict seem to be the norm. There will be a lot of turmoil in the short term with the CEO stepping down and the consolidation moves they've started. I would be worried to be in any of the other satellite offices. Taking care of their people doesn't seem to be a top priority from top leadership.

    Advice to Management

Over investment in non-core segments have spread us too thin. We need to take decisive action quickly so that they don't continue to act as a distraction as we consolidate. Your people are your most important resource, don't' forget it.

    Pros

    Interesting technology with unlimited potential

    Cons

Extremely long hours during busy seasons (which is half the year). Very limited upward promotional advancement. Company does not work to eliminate problems coming in the near future; only provide band-aid fixes.

I have been working at 3D Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Interesting field, disruptive technology, lots of challenging problems. Reasonable base salary. Great colleagues, devoted young people. Local atmosphere is good. 3DSytsems is a global company with lots of growth and learning potential.

    Cons

The company has been unable to handle the acquisitions it made in the last 5 years or so. Sometimes it acquired direct competitors that are simply unable to reconcile. The only reason could it be that it wanted to purchase market share and not the technology. As it goes it loses the technology, the people and the combined market share as well.

It's not a great place for software development in general. The base company is a hardware manufacturer and it does not appreciate software people. The company does not appreciate the business potentials that the acquired software companies brought. It loses quickly the trust of the existing and potential customers of those companies. As far as I can see the best developers and sales/marketing people are leaving or even let go.

There is no general vision where the company should go (except it wants to be #1 in the field). I see no technical, human or business differential that would lift us to be in that place, except the huge amount of capital it adsorbed in 2013 and it has lost in the last 18 months or so.

In general the company does not really appreciate its people. US benefits are not great. Bonus is almost non-existent. The office setup is inconvenient for concentrated work.

As the stock prize shows the company management has been unable to handle the stock market perception either.

    Advice to Management

Management should seriously rethink how it handles people in the company. HR, benefits should change.

The business unit model it is trying to introduce now can be directly harmful to the collaboration between the departments / former independent companies. That process should be turned back, but departments should still get real authority to make their own hiring/firing decision. They should be responsible of the results as well.

The company needs a serious CTO with real vision and power (!) who can express where additive manufacturing hardware and software should go.

I have been working at 3D Systems full-time

    Pros

There are a lot of good people working at 3dsystems and the dog friendly environment is fun to work in.

    Cons

Management does not provide any direction or support. Most things have to be approved by the CEO, so the Department directors and managers have almost no power. Salaries are low and the employee's are over worked.

    Advice to Management

You are running the company like a small business and not a publically traded company. I would suggest ending the consumer products production and focusing on the strengths of rapid prototyping and medical modeling.
