"Talented employees, but sort of struggling with growth"

I worked at 3D Systems (Less than a year)

    Pros

Seeing new developments with 3d printing and getting to see how the technology was changing. Office culture was mostly very encouraging - almost everyone i asked for help was more than willing to give their time and energy, and there are some really talented 3d designers/artists that work there.

    Cons

The company was a little bit too huge, and we worked hard on projects that were cut out of nowhere, since apparently another team across the country had also been working on something similar. Sometimes it felt like innovations weren't necessarily driven by actual needs, but rather just trying to figure out how to make cool 3d printed objects.

Also it was pretty apparent when certain employees weren't really doing anything or contributing (even though I heard they were eventually cut from their positions).

    Advice to Management

Try harder with company-wide communication. Emphasize more research into solving needs, rather than stressing 3d-printing objects for the sake of 3d printing.

    Pros

    Great People
    Great Office
    Interesting products
    Love the industry

    Cons

Systems were hard to find. I would have to look for all information as there was no-one to train me and there were no people to help me with finding simple information. Projects were started and then scrapped within a short amount of time so there was a lot of wasted effort.

    Advice to Management

I think you are reigning it in and have re-organized. That is/was truly needed.

    Pros

The company has many different groups, some of which are doing amazing, ground breaking work that has real potential. VJ has some great ideas, and is working to make the company feel more whole.

    Cons

Other areas/groups are left to their own devices, with little to work with - people are leaving, and others are expected to take on the extra work

    Pros

Open office concept, nice people to work with, good engineering managers

    Cons

Wilsonville is disenfranchised from the main office in rock hill sc. Not very customer oriented, customers are a nuisance mentality. Not very innovative in thinking and vision.

I worked at 3D Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

3D Systems is at the forefront of personalized healthcare. They've played a large part in some nationally recognized breakthoughs and humanitarian projects in the orthopedic reconstructive field. It's fairly easy to get a job out of college, but there is a reason for that. You will meet some really nice people, probably make some friends. The location is superb in the foothills of the Rockies- you can Mt. Bike at lunch!

    Cons

You are required to work ridiculously long, unpaid hours during the best months of the year and yet you will barely stay above water. Pay is much lower than standard for engineering back ground; though you need an engineering/design degree, it's very repetitive work, with little engineering principles involved. They hire right of college because it’s hard to say No when your given your first chance. Most only stick around a couple of years before realizing it's just not feasible long term. Management is young- those that were with the company the longest got promoted when the company was acquired. One manager in particular has driven several longer-term employees out. Don't expect much appreciation or sympathy for sacrificing your personal life for work. Room for growth is limited. Only a select group of individuals typically work on the really cool stuff. 90% of the output is the same stuff.

    Advice to Management

Figure out what needs to be done to eliminate the ridiculous amount of over time- or compensate for it! For example, start saying no to medical professionals who procrastinate so that the burden is placed on the employees. Employees shouldn't be working 50/60+ hour weeks for months out of the year, after being at a company for 3 years. By the time we start thinking of a family (or have started one)- we then have to start thinking of another job because this just won't work. Families can't be put on hold 4 months out of the year.

Listen to employee reviews (when in the company and during exits). It has to be obvious when the same person is brought up as being disrespectful/condescending to employees, pushing them out. No one wants to work for someone like that.

    Pros

A lot of room to forge your own way and take initiative.
Lots of great people to help onboard you.
    Interesting and dynamic tech.

    Cons

Past business practices have led to a cumbersome, unwieldy org.
    Non competitive salaries and benefits.

    Advice to Management

Streamline your goals and offerings. Be the best in one clear area. Cut the fat and any acquisitions made that don't contribute. Offer better infrastructure and competitive rates that feed into business goals
