      Great company

      Pros

Good work life balance. Awesome vacation (5wks starting out for all). Really smart coworkers and a fun office

      Cons

Salary could be more competitive. Horizontally focused so not a lot of room to move up vertically and everyone there is super intelligent, so it can feel competitive at times - especially among the grad hires

Great place to work, but tough to get promoted.

      Pros

+The people - With a department of 200+ data scientists you are part of a large community of smart, driven, and genuinely helpful individuals. Any time I'm struggling with a coding problem or want to brainstorm it's easy to find someone to help you out. +Work life balance - I've worked at 84.51 for over 5 years and I have never had an issue with work life balance or being forced to regularly work more than 40 hours a week. My managers have always encouraged me to use all my vacation and disconnect on evenings and weekends. Sure, special projects and situations come up where you need to step up and work extra but in my experience this is the exception rather than the rule. For those reviewers saying the amount of work is overwhelming - my advice to you is to be honest with your manager about the situation, and if they won't listen escalate to senior leadership. Could also help to learn how to say no/invest in time management skills. +Vacation - you start with 5 weeks plus 7 Health and Wellness days and you're actually encouraged to use them! You can also earn up to an extra week of vacation, +1 day for every year after your first year. +Tech stack - this is both a pro and a con. Pro - we are finally working on Azure and majority of Data Science is now coding in Python/PySpark. +Not as political as most places - I have had very little issues with politics working at 84.51 compared to previous companies. There are quite a few reviews saying promotions are political and I just don't see that. Sounds like they're just bitter and don't have the social ability to advocate for their own career. There's definitely some politics at play, but I challenge you to find a company this large where politics don't exist.

      Cons

-Lack of investment in long-term/existing employees - Once you reach the lead level it feels like you've hit a ceiling and investment in your career tapers off from a technical perspective as well as opportunities. -Not much machine learning work. If you're looking to just build models 100% of the time, this is not the place for you. -Pay - 84.51 is middle of the road (maybe even lower) in the Midwest. If you want a truly competitive salary, look elsewhere. Though the work-life balance, vacation, and lower stress environment does balance this out to an extent, but not enough to justify. -Kroger is slow to change - it's tough to sit back and watch competition blow by you when Kroger is a late-mover technologically. -Hard to get promoted/Flat organization - There are only 3 levels of being an individual contributor (data scientist, senior, lead) before you need to interview up to become a Director. This company is full of ambitious and smart data scientists and there is a bottleneck of Lead Data Scientists vying for leadership roles. There's a sense of needing to be at your level for a certain amount of time to be promoted unless you're one of their "rockstars" and then all of a sudden you're catapulted from entry level to director/vp which can be tough to swallow. -tech stack - the tech stack has been in constant flux but seems to have settled down over the past year. Some teams are still stuck working in SQL/old stack but most teams are now fully on Azure.

      Pros

5 weeks pto and trust me you'll need it with all the headaches you'll face

      Cons

Managers are not technical and have no sense of direction. Promotions are very political and often do not go to the hardest working person. If you get a bad manager (which is very likely) you won't even have the chance to take on impactful projects, they will just go to the manager's favorite person. Honestly, I commend the marketing for this company, they draw you in like they are an elite data science company. Once you get in, you realize that a lot of data science roles are a result of title inflation and you will literally just pull data/produce reports for consultants to steal all the credit. ML work is reserved for a very limited number of people, and if you get a chance you'll probably just use datarobot for the most part. Leadership talks the talk but don't take any actions when it counts the most.

Great PTO, but the company oversells itself

      Aug 31, 2021 - Data Scientist

      Pros

PTO, work/life balance sometimes, company culture(for the most part).

      Cons

This company is the biggest marketing sham. The perception of 84.51 is that it is a leading data science company doing highly interesting work. This couldn't be further from the truth. Many "data scientists" do not do any type of statistical work at all, not modeling, not A/B testing, not anything. Many data science roles are essentially data analysts, which is super fun because there is still a lot of holdover from the old duhnhumby days, which means many folks that you will work with do not have a clue how to work efficiently with new tools like Python/Git. There are so many internal solutions that have been duct taped together over the years from poor maintenance, which is one reason QA at this company is a nightmare. If you have to do QA, good luck, because those data scientists that are holdovers from the old days? They write awful code that is awful to QA. When you're not looking at the code, you'll be doing something even more tedious like looking over an Excel file line by line because that's how we do QA.
