A Couple of Gurus provides excellent opportunities for IT professionals. As an IT consulting firm and managed service provider, the breadth and depth of the technologies and industries worked with by individual engineers is hard to match. The company culture is friendly, with few political issues and fairly laid-back management. Being a small, but growing company, there are frequently exciting challenges to overcome. For IT professionals, there is a good mixture between implementing new systems and maintaining the rest -- it is certainly hard to get bored.
There is often a lack of focus and follow through on the part of management, and the entire organization suffers as a result. Due to the small size of the company, there are periodic staffing issues -- either the company is understaffed, leaving too much work for too many people -- or, the company overextends its hiring and is forced to make tough decisions when clients leave or cutback. There is also a big skill gap between some of the engineers, leaving the more senior engineers burned out and the more junior engineers feeling overwhelmed.
Advice to Management
Keep focused on a smaller subset of goals, with more aggressive deadlines. Balance the engineering staff skill level between profitability and client technical needs -- the bottom-heavy engineering staff is struggling to keep up with the needs of your clients.
I worked at A Couple of Gurus full-time (More than a year)
Friendly culture focused on process improvements, work/life balance, structure, and progress. Occasional opportunities for training, and lots of exposure to a wide variety of technology.
Small business supporting small business means constant budgetary constraints, a roller coaster of work that overshadows the concept of work/life balance, and broad, but shallow technology exposure. New technology is sold and implemented without proper onboarding as a norm, and there are simply not enough employees to improve the processes and procedures at a reasonable rate.
Advice to Management
In structuring the organization, try to keep people more focused on specific tasks. Nearly every employee, especially the CEO and Operations Manager, are juggling too much and aren't able to focus on the most important items.
