I have been working at A.T. Cross full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great brand, long heritage, wonderful products, craftsmanship, original US/RI brand, innovation, opportunities in new segments like leather, watches and accessories, be part of a turnaround story

    Cons

Tough business, missing distribution, not enough funding for marketing activities, low brand awareness or relevance, long development processes, too slow and bureaucratic

    Advice to Management

Faster decisions, clearer directions, invest more in non-writing product development, open up for more creative marketing ideas

I worked at A.T. Cross full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good coworkers, Next door to a Starbucks

    Cons

To top heavy for a small company, very slow moving, no innovation or risk taking, no trust in the internal teams (only in outside consultants and agencies from NYC), no raises without a fight, very little day-to-day involvement from managers.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to spend the time up front to make solid plans before instructing teams to execute ideas - lots of wasted time on doing things that are off the cuff ideas management has, and that end up going nowhere and waste the teams time, and cause frustrations.

    Pros

Long-standing American brand. Interesting product collections

    Cons

Upper management disconnected from rest of the organization. Terrible communication. (BTW, Dave Whalen has not been the CEO for years.) Organization seems to have lost focus, senior managers hired since 2014 have no fine writing industry experience nor understanding of marketplace and new strategic direction does not look likely to succeed.

    Advice to Management

Remember who you are and don't try to be something you are not. There is no value in being a "me-too" brand.

    I worked at A.T. Cross full-time

    Pros

Employee discounts on products. Company moved to Providence so they are closer to mall and attractions. Not much else.

    Cons

By far, the worst company I've ever worked for. There is no support from management, lack of teamwork and respect, difficult to communicate with other departments. Outdated processes and systems from the 1990s. People are constantly bickering, unhappy, pointing fingers, unnecessarily creating a negative environment and nonsense stress. Terrible email etiquette and lack of professionalism. Old thinking is holding the company back. Too many employees who've been with the company for years are jaded due to company's many changes in management and direction. They resist change while demanding favoritism and complain non-stop about everything. Their old ways and mentality are obstacles for new comers wanting to bring in new ideas and experience. Supervisors have very poor leadership skills. Upper management is detached. Operations team is disorganized and chaotic. There is no room for growth and blatant favoritism.

    Advice to Management

Company needs a complete overhaul. I suggest hiring a consulting firm to help with re-organizing and "modernizing" a company that operates 20-30 years behind. Invest in updating all systems and business practices. Bring in new talent. Older employees are not adding any value and longevity to the brand.

I worked at A.T. Cross full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great products and people. The leadership group that was in place while I was there was excellent

    Cons

Owned by a PE firm may have led to not giving the executive team enough time to turn the company around. This is completely understandable when considering Cross was not achieving the level of growth that may be expected from a PE firm ownership. Too many products. PE Firm brought in "turn-around" specialists which results in trimming headcount without fully understanding the business.

    Advice to Management

Get back to the fine writing instrument roots of the company with a focus on only those product lines and eliminate the rest.
