    Pros

    Lacking a little in flexibility

    Advice to Management

Continue to train employees and management by updating skill sets to maintain competitiveness for the future.

I worked at A.W. Chesterton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Many long service employees that know their stuff and are easy to work with. Compensation is at market. Employee benefits (medical, dental, insurance) are very good.

    Cons

Since the management change in mid-2006, power is now concentrated in a COO and a CSO. On day one, reserved parking spaces for VPs went up. Going to open office concept with tiny workstations, except for VPs and some directors / HR / legal. Attitude is everyone is replaceable. Far too many ex-Sylvania people, that has become a clique. All metrics driven, make those happen or die trying. AWC's work culture has become toxic and hard-nosed - in my opinion.

    Advice to Management

Turnover is becoming a big problem (which of course, makes for some career opportunities, but a long learning curve). People make the metrics happen. Treat people with dignity and respect and they will stay. Customers should always be #1, but demeaning, disrespectful behavior toward employees cannot be tolerated.

I worked at A.W. Chesterton full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people at the company are passionate, close and driven to results. The culture consists of personnel who are funny, caring and inquisitive. The culture from top down encourage employees to get involved in the company, the community, and their surroundings. The 'Love Where You Work' program as well as the 'mentoring program' bring employees closer as well as offer opportunities and growth to those who get involved.

    Cons

There is a lot of change going on and moving fast so if you can't keep the pace it might not be the place to be. They 'drive for results' and look forward to continued growth so if you can keep your eye on the ball you could be a part of a bright future. This is only a con if you can't keep pace in a quick moving environment.

    Advice to Management

Keep the warmth, the fun and the feeling of family.

I worked at A.W. Chesterton (Less than a year)

    Pros

Small company feel, but good amount of resources to accomplish what needs to be done. Everyone feels like a family and acts accordingly.

    Cons

Business is very R&D based, and most of the projects are one offs for specific customers.

I have been working at A.W. Chesterton full-time

    Pros

Great employee focus and career development opportunities - will always look first to promote from within. Supportive management, great co-workers, good team environment.

    Cons

Company has struggled to catch up with modern business practices. Stuck in old processes and workarounds - difficult to implement effective change. Communication throughout the company is also a huge problem.

    Advice to Management

Take steps to be a forward thinking company - get the business out of the "this is the way it's always been done" attitude.

    Pros

Chesterton is an incredibly family oriented company. The management was always very accommodating if I had to leave early for a family necessity etc. I only worked there for a year because we were moving, from the interview process through my exit interview the entire experience was incredibly rewarding.

    Cons

I would like to see the company adopt some of the more progressive benefits that other companies offer (better time-off, family leave, etc). It is manufacturing so I realize it is not Facebook, but it would be nice.

    Advice to Management

    Keep rewarding good work!
