I have been working at A123 Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Li-ion batteries are not just for electric vehicles. A123 is also making Li-ion batteries to replace the lead-acid batteries in every type of vehicle. A123 is growing within this growing market. There are great opportunities to participate in cleaning up the automotive industry as well as participate in shaping the culture and processes of this growing company.

    Cons

Sometimes the right person or process is not yet in place to support your work.

    Advice to Management

Sales team is bringing in business faster than product development team can adapt for the growing work load. Hire more people.

I have been working at A123 Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of Potential. Growing business with improving benefits. Very nice work environment and work-life balance.

    Cons

Heavy dependence on sales to China creates risk if a trade war arises. However, management is aggressively working on broader customer diversification.

    Advice to Management

Continue Increasing the Focus on Management by Data. Visit the Plant floor more and get to know the hourly folks. It's where the problems and solutions are.

I have been working at A123 Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The fundamental R&D group is focused on developing game changing technologies for lithium-ion starter battery, start-stop, PHEV, and EV applications. Once the technology is demonstrated, the company has a clearly defined path for transferring the technology from the laboratory bench top, to pilot production, and onto full scale manufacturing. Seeing technology that you are a part of make it directly into a product that can play a role in the growth of the company as well as have a positive impact on the environment is satisfying.

    Cons

A challenge associated with working in the R&D organization is finding work-life balance. This is due to the compressed timelines and frequent travel associated with the huge growth the company is currently experiencing.

    Advice to Management

Continue the current path that is focused on developing internal talent in order to ensure longevity and continuity within the organization while simultaneously bringing in young, talented scientists and engineers to encourage the influx of new ideas.

I have been working at A123 Systems (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with, good environment

    Cons

Beinga contract to hire, it takes really long for someone to get hired in unless you get promoted.

  8. "Great company but struggles with management leadership"

    I worked at A123 Systems full-time

    Pros

Great technology and the opportunity to have a big impact

    Cons

Solid leadership was an issue before the bankruptcy, but post bankruptcy and purchase by Wanxiang has left the company floundering. The primary focus is reducing cost: which is a good thing. But, there is also a view among many employees that the company isn't making the good solid investments for the long term. While Wanxiang did make some changes, they are a very hands-off company and left much of the A123 leadership team in place.

    Advice to Management

People need to see the upside. What's in it for the employees other than just employment. Benefits are practically nil, there are no stock options or company ownership opportunities and benefits are very limited.

I have been working at A123 Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The interesting technology at A123, from both the product perspective and the manufacturing perspective, draws many talented people to work there. It has a physically pleasant working environment, as far as manufacturing plants go. There is no union, and most of the staff is easy to work with.

    Cons

The Li-ion battery cell business has not yet reached it's projected profitability levels. (thus the recent bankruptcy) This has led to substantial employee turn-over over the past year.

    Pros

A123 offers a tremendous opportunity to learn and grow as a professional. Just get ready to work hard for your success. The company has a strong core of smart and hardworking people. The technology is impressive.

    Cons

Sometimes limited information sharing from top management. Information goes up, but not much comes back down. Long hours. Not much priority given to work life balance.

    Advice to Management

The company needs to do a better job vetting markets and put more energy and resources behind manufacturing process development.

    Pros

Great benefits. Good front-line management. Excellent work conditions and competent engineers.

    Cons

The automotive battery business for all-electrics is not as hot as it was thought. There have been a lot of layoffs and very likely more to come.

    Advice to Management

More realistic expectations of the market. They started very strong but a bit too strong. This led to layoffs and work stoppages when business dropped.
