I have been working at ACCESS (MI) full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

On the staff level, many people are devoted and committed to assisting those in need within the immediate community surrounding the organization.

    Cons

Lack of identified organizational chart (who really makes the decisions) hired as a direct report but actually answered to many, at the top executive level conflicting ideas of what is the vision/mission, hostile work environment, lack of basic systems, employs motivated by fear, company rules and guidelines do not apply to all, subtle discriminatory attitude at the top level, lack of diversity at the management level. Very disappointing experience.

    Advice to Management

Review the organization's culture, mission and vision. Communicate clearly and effectively with employees, update systems, embrace change, address the organization's culture of cronyism, fear and ineffectiveness.

I worked at ACCESS (MI) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are decent. Lots of young passionate people to work next to. Depending on the position there is opportunity to gain unique experience for your resume.

    Cons

Management/structure isn't efficient. Definitely doesn't encourage outside the box thinkers. Salary not worth the time and effort required with no advancement or appreciation

    Advice to Management

Invest in the young passionate folks some more. Trust the talent you have before you discourage them to leave for another organization who values their input and efforts.

    Pros

    Cons

Terrible management and no lack of structure in decision making. Top management runs it like a family business .

Get your act together- focus on better systems and more transparency.

I worked at ACCESS (MI) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are not a single pro to be found. Please check the cons.

    Cons

Founder of ACCESS left 3 years ago because of the bad direction of the current director and the rubber stamp board. All board members and the director himself live outside the community and know nothing about the community. THe director pays himself a salary of $140K per year when he had done nothing for ACCESS or the community. He has been in charge for 30 years and piled thousands of dollars for himself. Not bad for a Communist Comrade. The hiring policy is a sham. They only hire those who belong to the communist party of Lebanon. The service is a farce. Customers wait for service hours on end and recieve no regard or respect from the abnoxious staff and then they have pay for the service to a supposedly non-profit organization that gets millions in donations. Just check with those poor customers and the previous borad members and founder of ACCESS.

    Advice to Management

Resign your position along with your YES board before you get caught, and dedicate yourself instead to the C Party, and don't camouflage it and hide behind Access Executive Directorship.

    Pros

great opportunity to work and contribute to the company. Meet people from all over the metro-Detroit area and beyond.

    Cons

With the Community Health & Research Center employment is very selective and often times plays favorites with who stays employed. Potential for growth is limited.

    Pros

Many mid- and lower-level staff members are extremely dedicated to the important work of this organization but hampered by poor infrastructure and lack of respect.

    Cons

Upper management is heirarchical -- dominated by special interests and huge egos that eclipse this organization's potential to do some really good work

    Advice to Management

Encourage creative thinking; cultivate talent and develop a culture that appreciate and encourages staff

I worked at ACCESS (MI) (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of people performing a large number of services

    Cons

Organization seems stubbornly set in their ways. Unwilling to listen to new ideas. Organization seems to somehow micromanage and not manage at all simultaneously.

    Advice to Management

You folks can do so much better! Develop your talent instead of chase it away

I have been working at ACCESS (MI) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent benefits (even if long time employees complain frequently!)
    Mission-driven work & dedicated coworkers
Excellent place to network within the non-profit, metro-Detroit industry

    Cons

New ideas are almost universally unsupported
Quality in coordinators/managers is extremely inconsistent; most middle-managers are allowed to run their department in any way they want, even if it is a far cry from the values of the organization
Good people are let go despite quality work; advancement, when possible, has very little to do with work performance

    Advice to Management

Take more control of organizational culture by asking employees to review their managers/supervisors. There is some toxic middle-management in this organization that really runs counter to the direction the executive team is trying to move the organization in.

    Pros

Warm passionate people, doing great work. Great reputation in the community and at the cutting edge of many programs and initiatives.

    Cons

Each department has its own culture and some are less warm than others. Some programs receive less funding than others.

    Advice to Management

Provide more training and support for young talented staff that are willing to work hard and grow. It's important to retain young talent!
