I have been working at ACE Group full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ace offers competitive salary and bonus structure. They are willing to invest in their employees and encourage further education. The referral program is generous. Employees generally get along well and are happy working with each other.

    Cons

Matrix system of bosses stretches employees too thin. Often times the VPs and Directors don't communicate and as result I get stretched too thin. Can be very stressful at times. With so many different lines of business it's hard for the left hand to know what the right hand is doing.

    Advice to Management

Abandon matrix hierarchies. Go with the standard pyramid. Periodically ask employees to evaluate their bosses.

I have been working at ACE Group full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Decent benefits, especially ESPP. Company has great combined ratio. Lots of potential.

    Cons

Micro-management often by people with far less experience than those they manage. Recent merge with Fireman's Fund strongly favored existing PRS mgmt. over Fireman's much more experienced staff leaving many unhappy and less productive employees. Far too much work expected which can't be achieved in an 8hr day. Existing mgmt is closed minded - a huge barrier to progress and only interested in maintaining control, plus lacks experience, plays favorites and can't keep up with the work. Has a totally unrealistic view of expense control via refusal to staff appropriately, so the savings in expense will tripled in indemnity by poorly adjusted files. What company says you must work a min. of 8hrs a day which clearly implies you must work beyond same. In fact, rating for performance just changed to raise expectations even higher for just an average performance.

    Advice to Management

Re-consider the FUND staff for roles currently given to ACE employees who have less experience and expertise, increase staffing, consider work/life balance as a priority-we don't work because it's our life, we work to support our lives and would like to enjoy them. You will get more productivity from happy workers.

    Pros

All the programs for advancement exisit (rotation programs/internships/mentoring). International opportunity. Company culture favors younger employees, interns, etc.

    Cons

A word of caution for young female professionals: Once you get to a certain level, you have to work 2x as hard as your male peers to get the same recognition. I've worked very hard, got the degrees/certificates/etc, but over the past 5 years I've seen too many frat boys with faux-hawks surpass me in promotions and higher salary for the same or lesser accomplishments & credentials.
Pay scale information was once available to employees but now only managers have access. The company takes advantage of female employees and routinely compensate women below their paygrades; taking advantage of the tendency of women not aggressively negotiating salary. Even if you ask for the raise, all the textbook trends prevail; men are promoted on potential and women are denied promotion until after years of proving themselves. Senior management mentions inclusion and diversity along with the ACE Women's Forum, but it is all window dressing. One of the highest-ranking females recently left the company in June 2015, so there really is no representation or mentorship left from women in the "c-suite" unless you count the executive sectetaries.
It's a scape-goat to say that the lack of female senior management is because ACE women simply do not "work as hard" or "earn" the role as their male counterparts in this "meritocracy". An inconsistent arguement when women are now world leaders and CEOs of companies many times the size of ACE, and yet somehow women haven't reached these levels at ACE.
Move to a company that has a deeper commitment to fair wage practices (hard to find, but they do exist) and transparent promotion and compensation policies. Make sure you are recognized for your efforts!

    Advice to Management

-Payscale ranges should be visible to ALL employees.
-Remove the "meritocracy". This creates competition among employees, yes, but it also cannabalizes talent as employees sabotoge each others' merits and breaks down communication and teamwork.
-Make diversity and inclusion part of the corporate business plan. Currently organizations such as the ACE Women's Forum (AWF) run on volunteers and donated funds and treated as a "hobby"; like a book club or social group. The CEO needs to take this more seriously or else there will continue to be a talent bleed as experienced employees leave for better opportunities, work/life balance and inclusive culture. My ratings are from the standpoint of a woman; if you are a young, white, male workaholic, you will move quickly up the ranks.

    Pros

If you like a clear-cut schedule, repetitive tasks and no room to be creative, work here.

    Cons

No room to be creative. No upward mobility. No ability to feel human. Sitting inside all day.

    Advice to Management

Empower your employees. Remember they are human beings.
