Pros
good benefits when people start
Cons
Moving too quickly in marketplace
- Current Employee, more than 10 years★★★★★
Pros
Very good and wide arrangement of benefits. Flexible hours and work from home opprotunities. New workout facility.
Cons
Very top heavy. Very siloed in both nature and structure. To many hands in the cookie jar related to ACT's vision. Not one central thought or path. No trust in own employees. Would rather trust consultants.
Continue readingThank you for your contribution to ACT over the years. We’re glad you’re enjoying the benefits offered to ACT team members, our most valuable resource. You might be interested to know that our senior leader population is less than 6% of our total staff, and this trend toward a more professional workforce actually began in 2001. We’re confident about the direction of ACT and are excited about impact that will be made by incoming CEO Marten Roorda.

Pros
The grounds are beautiful.....nice cafeteria. The benefits package is good.....lots of PTO.
Cons
Women are unlikely to move up compared to men......men advance faster and more frequently into upper management positions....verbal and sexual abuse complaints happen a lot and are ignored by HR......reorganizations happen every month.....Many AVPs who "work" offsite or remotely or who are located in Iowa but don't have anybody who reports to them they are always whining about budget problems.

ACT
ACT managers receive training on ACT’s Code of Ethics which requires managers to take prompt corrective action for conduct in violation of the Code. ACT also has a policy prohibiting workplace harassment; and encourages team members to report concerns to Talent Strategy. Any complaint of harassment is taken seriously and is investigated. ACT strives to provide a supportive work environment and supports the career development of its team members.

Pros
Free parking. Cafeteria with decent food. Good benefits (or at least they used to be). Nice gym that they spent a pretty penny on. Beautiful campus.
Cons
Constant layoffs that come out of the blue. I was laid off twice by ACT. They keep people who’ve had negative performance reviews or who are poor managers. They don’t care about what they do to people’s lives. Only take a job here if you’re desperate, and be prepared to be let go at any moment.

It's gainful employment

I actually liked most of the work that I was doing and found it somewhat intellectually stimulating. The benefits are good for f/t staff. There are a lot of really bright people to work with. There are opportunities for continuing education and good speakers come to present on campus. The campus is lovely, by the way. Attire is business casual.
Cons
I find the cons to outweigh the pros (aside from having a stable job). The company seems to be in a fairly constant state of restructuring. It's gotten to the point where "farewells" stopped being announced. My farewell came as part of yet another round of corporate restructuring. Growth opportunities are highly dependent on individual managers. If you don't have one who advocates for you and/or your department, you'll stay in the same position. Salary is not competitive. It also wasn't commensurate with experience in my case. In subsequent years I neither advanced in position nor made gains in salary.

- ACT is full of great employees - not only are they some of the smartest people you can find, but they are some of the most caring, driven, and supportive people you could wish to work with. I can't say enough positive things about the people I have worked with in many different areas of the company - Benefits are good - in addition to excellent healthcare and retirement match, employees have 3 weeks of vacation, 6 personal/floating holidays, 10 sick days, 1 volunteer day, and a large number of company holidays. Also several perks such as local discounts, on site fitness classes, etc are available - ACT has a current focus on learning and has many opportunities to take on new projects and learn both in the classroom and on the job - Beautiful campus, good quality facilities
Cons
- Career growth is slow or non-existent. Despite lots of opportunity to take on more responsibility and learn and become involved in new projects, there is little recognition for extra initiative and promotions are few and far between for most. - Pay is average or low compared to similar jobs elsewhere. This is probably partly due to being a non-profit. Raises for performance were 2% for most employees this year. - ACT is going through a lot of change right now and that can be challenging for those who are not flexible and who have trouble adjusting to things constantly changing around them. This will not be forever but right now makes ACT a great employer for some personalities and a difficult one for others.

Good benefits and insurance. There are many great people in the company.
Cons
Going through IT outsourcing - poorly. UNtrained, unexperience and incompetent management. If A's hire A's and B's hire C's - ACT is primarily C's and D's
