I have been working at ADTRAN as an intern

Have an excellent co-op program at the Huntsville location. Extremely accommodating

    Cons

After being hired there isn't much room for advancement and the pay is a considerable amount less than other employers in the area

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The work is reliable; if you do your job, you aren't likely to lose it. The environment is generally friendly. 40 hours/week is average and more are rarely required. Vacation requests are usually easily approved. Stock grants for engineers.

    Cons

All engineers have the same title to prevent jealousy between employees, but as a side effect, hard to determine route to advancement (as engineer) and better salary. Raises are only around 2.5-3.5%. Inter-team development is rarely synchronized or prioritized at the same levels. Little responsibility for poor decisions and yet management is hesitant to make decisions.

    Advice to Management

Assign responsibility for project decisions to a single individual or two at most to avoid design delays. Hold those people responsible for their decisions; insuring poor decisions aren't duplicated and reward good decisions. Insure all teams on a project have same priorities for tasks.

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

ADTRAN is no longer "set in its ways" as many reviewers have described the culture. There has been a shift in thinking by management. Collaborative spaces are now becoming a reality, business is up by 14% YTD and stock is up, and most importantly the dynamic of ADTRAN is changing. New, young, diversified talent with fresh ideas are transforming the ADTRAN culture. This review is coming from a 23 year old who has been working here for over two years now. I've seen the drastic change in these past two years and change will continue.

    Cons

Not a con but you people need to read this: As a woman, you get paid the same as a man so don't listen to the other reviewers. Pay is good. It has been significantly raised (approx 60,000) to compete with the other companies in Research Park in Huntsville, AL. As a new hire, it includes a large bonus.

    Advice to Management

Advice to the employees of ADTRAN: To those complaining about "not moving up", ever think it might be a problem with yourself? Communication skills are valued over technical skills at ADTRAN. Great, you can code. But can you interface with a customer in a business perspective, too? No? Then develop those skills. Take classes. That's what I've done and I've already gained recognition for it. In other words, people notice me. Having an engineering degree isn't everything. Get an MBA (that is paid for by ADTRAN btw) and you're unstoppable. Business mind + Engineering mind = $Lots of money$. That combination is deadly here and everywhere else. Take this advice from a passionate employee who wants the best for ADTRAN and it's employees.

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company is conservative in business philosophy but aggressive in selected product development. As a mid-size company, we have the resources needed to invest in the business for the long-term

    Cons

Organic growth is highly valued as opposed to growth through M&A. That can be good and bad. It just depends on the area of the business which has the most potential--these typically use most of the resources.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. Maintain aggressive projects for key technologies in which the company can establish long-term ROI
