I worked at ADTRAN full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I actually enjoyed the work I was doing but that was independent of the company or my supervisors.

    Cons

They are very cheap. You have to jump through hoops to even get paper or pens. They often hire temporary control employees rather than salaried employees so they don't have to pay benefits. They think they're clever in doing so but everyone is aware of their MO which creates a poor morale. There were several employees that were promised to be made salaried and that were just strung along. There is just the sense that your expendable so management that is their hold onto their jobs for dear life and often treat employees with an almost suspicious behavior because they're afraid to lose their jobs. When I first started, some employees warned me to be careful that other employees might feed you false information to make you look bad. It was one of the most bizarre place I've ever worked. The bureaucracy is like nothing I've ever dealt with as well and often hindered productivity.

    Advice to Management

Make middle-management do their jobs. There's deathly a disconnect between the officers and employees. It always seem like the managers were just always trying to puff themselves up and will take credit for anything to do so. And just because the person has been there for ages doesn't mean that they're doing the job properly. Don't be afraid of change.

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Excellent Facilities
Better than average co-workers. More knowledgeable and competent in their work.
Starting to rejoin the diverse engineering organizations into a single unit (better employee-manager ratios)
Some of the dinosaurs in upper management have less people reporting to them

    Cons

So heavily understaffed, managers are reluctant to let engineers progress in their career objectives since opening a new-hire slot is next to impossible.
Slightly lower pay for comparable jobs in the industry/area.

    Advice to Management

With the telecom industry changing as quickly as it is, holding back on spending and hiring will just keep the company behind the times more and more. Good employees are already voting with their feet as they walk out the door to better opportunities.

A couple of the senior VPs really need to consider retiring to make way for people who understand what is going to need to be addressed in the next 2-3 years to make the company more successful.

    I worked at ADTRAN full-time

    Pros

Decent benefits, job-security if you don't care about advancing your career. Easy to fly under the radar. The gym is cheap and the cafes are decent.

    Cons

    - Employees are underpaid, especially for women and minorities.
    - All priority is given to expense reduction.
    - No flexibility to work from home. This was especially ironic when we were told to participate in a Skype pilot.
    - Management didn't understand my position or the platform that I supported.
    - Outdated view of company vision being applied even though they are attempting to transition to a software company.
    - Use of buzzwords to compensate for lack of understanding of current technology landscape.
    - Management is more concerned that you are in your office, rather than whether you are actually contributing to the business. Ie, babysitters.
    - Projects are set-up for failure due to lack of trust in SMEs, too many meetings to make simple decisions, and lack of talent due to frustration and leaving company.
    - Management doesn't take into account soft cost when it comes to making a vendor decision, only the bottom line.
    - No motivation after being told no so many times.

    Advice to Management

    - Understand and maximize the capabilities of existing tools.
    - Evaluate total cost when making vendor decisions.
    - Invest in the resources necessary to maintain tools and platforms.
    - Allow employees to work from home.
    - Pay people what they are worth, make them feel like they matter and that they are making a contribution.

People are friendly. Carrier products are at par with industry

    Cons

No career growth whatsoever. Some unhealthy politics, zero direction or positive motivation from executive management.

    Advice to Management

Nobody is truly happy here. Only seem to hear from the CEO when someone dies.

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Great coworkers and facilities
    Good cafeteria

    Cons

Heavily understaffed and poor compensation compaired to rest of companies in the area
Lack of career path and advancement unless you join the ever growing group of first level management
Company tends to value reacting instead of strategic plnning. This may be due to managers becoming more insular and territorial over the years.
Heavy turnover in talent in the last 2-1/2 years

    Advice to Management

Visit more often with the design and test engineers. Until you regain the lost trust of your creative talent, you will never truely understand the reasons for the increased turnover. And giving a presentation once a year where your first words are your name and title, since many new hires have never even seen you before, does not constitute a valid or sincere visit.

    Pros

Nice facilities, some good perks if you are in the Huntsville office (on-site gym and nurse). Traditionally, they were a stable place and rather laid back.

    Cons

There is no clear direction coming from management and the only thing that seems to matter is the Wall St bottom line. Everyone is overworked and being tasked to do more with less. Morale is pretty shot.

    Advice to Management

Come up with a clear vision to take the company forward. Invest in your people, new technology, new ideas to turn the company around.

I worked at ADTRAN full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Clean buildings and very laid back company.

    Cons

Management and HR are inconsistant with the company policy. The policy is what ever they want it to be at any given time and with any given employee. The maufacturing management team will not stand up for you,or at least not some. Management both manufacturing and HR are not very professional, but yet they tell you that you need to be. Management talks bad about other comnpanies and they have not worked anywhere but ADTRAN, so how do they know. Not professional in my opinion. Some managers hide information from the employees because they do nopt want the employees to use the program.

    Advice to Management

All managers should have the same policy. You work for the same company. Stop hideing information from the employees. Be honest with your employees. They help the company make money.
