I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

ADTRAN is no longer "set in its ways" as many reviewers have described the culture. There has been a shift in thinking by management. Collaborative spaces are now becoming a reality, business is up by 14% YTD and stock is up, and most importantly the dynamic of ADTRAN is changing. New, young, diversified talent with fresh ideas are transforming the ADTRAN culture. This review is coming from a 23 year old who has been working here for over two years now. I've seen the drastic change in these past two years and change will continue.

    Cons

Not a con but you people need to read this: As a woman, you get paid the same as a man so don't listen to the other reviewers. Pay is good. It has been significantly raised (approx 60,000) to compete with the other companies in Research Park in Huntsville, AL. As a new hire, it includes a large bonus.

    Advice to Management

Advice to the employees of ADTRAN: To those complaining about "not moving up", ever think it might be a problem with yourself? Communication skills are valued over technical skills at ADTRAN. Great, you can code. But can you interface with a customer in a business perspective, too? No? Then develop those skills. Take classes. That's what I've done and I've already gained recognition for it. In other words, people notice me. Having an engineering degree isn't everything. Get an MBA (that is paid for by ADTRAN btw) and you're unstoppable. Business mind + Engineering mind = $Lots of money$. That combination is deadly here and everywhere else. Take this advice from a passionate employee who wants the best for ADTRAN and it's employees.

    Pros

Fantastic culture. ADTRAN knows how to continue to make money in the High Tech industry and has remained profitable through the past 25 years. ADTRAN is known for their quality and incredible technical support. They maintain engineering and support in house with badged employees based in the US. This is a huge positive in an industry littered with hardware vendors and high tech companies that outsource everything.

    Cons

Slow to market on newer technologies. Limited resources.

    Advice to Management

Be willing to strategically take a chance on an acquisition to move ADTRAN forward in Enterprise networking.

    Pros

Fantastic culture. Great work environment. ADTRAN knows how to continue to make money in the High Tech industry and has remained profitable through the past 25 years. Company's small size allows it to have a flat hierarchical structure. The company does not have an organization chart nor do employees have job descriptions. That forces new employees to really walk the halls and talk to peers as they get up to speed within the company. Managers don't micromanage

    Cons

Slow to market new technologies. Salary is average to below average.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

    Pros

The work environment at ADTRAN is quite welcoming to everyone here, and an engineering mindset is encouraged by management, which is an advantage.

    Cons

While a software process can sometimes seem burdensome to engineers, sometimes it is nice to have more structured code management.

    Advice to Management

If you continue to be aggressive and target your focus to the untapped areas of the market then ADTRAN will continue to thrive.

    Pros

ADTRAN is a stable engineering-driven company, and it's staffed with professional, sane, reasonable people with normal interests and families and lives. If you live in the Huntsville area you can probably appreciate that. People are exceptionally helpful and friendly, and the facilities are beautiful. Everyone gets their own office with a view. The campus is large with many beautifully manicured acres and a large lake surrounded by the two towers. Even the cafeteria serves exceptional food at very fair prices.

The pay is average for the area--good for the South, not quite as rich as the defense contractors pay.

    Cons

In order to attain promotions you must be driven and committed to excellence, meet deadlines, and at some level you are responsible for making yourself visible to your management. Not that being driven to excellence is a con at all, but ADTRAN is large enough that visibility can be an issue. The management doesn't focus too much on formalisms, and as such, the review process can be lacking. Feedback is hard to come by unless you interact regularly with peers and your management.

    Advice to Management

Take the review process seriously. Continue to invest in your engineers and technical staff through on-site educational opportunities. Give specific feedback regularly, and set some clearly defined goals. You might be surprised what people can do when they're sufficiently challenged.

    Pros

As a co-op they give you alot of real world work and you aren't just running around getting engineers coffee.

    Cons

For the first term you are usually put into a testing group. However, this is a necessary evil because you need to learn how the products work.

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The products are awesome and the campus is first rate. Good people in a good market. Although the environment is still good, it used to be much, much better.

    Cons

company tends to run lean, which is a pro and a con. Often short handed but being over worked is more secure than being under worked and fearing a pink slip...

    Advice to Management

Too much focus on business expenses rather than Engineering results the past several years has changed the atmosphere drastically and reduced individual productivity and/or creativity.
