    Pros

On the forefront of telecommunications advancements, shaping and supporting the face of the Industry. Incredibly sharp and often brilliant developers. Beautiful facility, challenging and meaningful work with many chances to directly interface and support end users! Awesome benefits, and wonderful people.

Tons of room for advancement! Adtran is one of the few companies I know that not only pays for you to go back to school to further your degree, but will also immediately promote you once you achieve that degree. There is a plethora of opportunity for advancement, but it is on you. If you hire in with a BS, go back to school to get your Masters (and Adtran pays for school!), and you get immediately promoted to a Masters, or even PhD. Hire in to Manufacturing with an AS? Go back to school, get your BS, and Engineering awaits. I’ve even known people to hire into Engineering, get a degree in a different field such as Business or Sales, and get promoted to that position.

Product development comes in cycles, and each time a new product emerges, there are tons of opportunities for anyone to take a leadership role in that development. Every couple of quarters, the product and challenges change or expand thus keeping the challenge fresh and interesting.

Further, over time, I’ve personally seen many employees get promoted into managerial positions. But let’s be real about something, there are only X amount of managerial positions, and Managers tend to keep their jobs. No company can promote every employee to Management. Not possible. But ANY employee can further their education, at Adtran’s expense, and immediately be promoted based on their achievements. And this doesn’t apply to just scholastic degrees! Adtran also pays for and encourages application specific training and certification (CCNA, etc) and rewards you for that.

    Cons

Product management tends to have their heads in the clouds making promises to customers that aren't realistic.

    Advice to Management

Re-evaluate the Product Management organization. Put some experienced Engineers into those positions, and have, at the least, Quarterly meetings with Engineering Managers – the Managers directly working on the products and know product potential and limitations. And really take a look at what ODM products are giving us. ODMs are often acquired cheaply, but bring with them a plethora of problems, and often perform cheaply thus cheapening the company reputation. Keep Adtran products at the superior level of quality and performance Adtran is known for.

    Pros

Great entrepreneurial spirit. Can be forward thinking when it comes to developing the product.

    Cons

All employees should be treated like the engineers
Management can be rigid. Sometime management has it's head in the sand.
Management should remember that their greatest assets are their employees whether a production employee or an engineer.

I worked at ADTRAN (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The Phoenix division was an excellent place to work. It was a challenging and fun work experience while it lasted. Excellent work/life balance. A very good management and a a good team environment..

    Cons

It was all work and very little emphasis on employee training. We could have done with a lot more training

I have been working at ADTRAN (Less than a year)

    Pros

They treat coops very well, a very good start for anyone's career. According to Adtran's shuttle driver, over 50% coop and intern students return to Adtran after graduation.

    Cons

I merely worked at Adtran for one summer semester and really does not feel uncomfortable at all. Thus I have no cons to share, folks.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. Adtran is very good for all interns and coops. Even the shuttle driver told me that more than 50% coops students return to Adtran.

I worked at ADTRAN (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company culture is very team oriented, you get a mentor as an intern or co-op, but your entire team will become an invaluable resource. If you are a student looking to have a great internship or co-op, this is a great place to do it.

    Cons

There is basically no upward mobility in terms of salary and promotions. You could possibly be there in the same salary range for a while.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the internships and co-op opportunities and move the entire development unit towards collaborative workspaces.

I worked at ADTRAN full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

great hours (4/10's with possible OT), beautiful campus, friendly and helpful managers, great food in the cafeteria, monthly birthday parties for employees (one day of each month employees born in that particular month got excused from work to go to a 30min "party" with the CEO and have cake).

    Cons

very dated computers and programs (it was 2010 and we were using Windows 95)

    Advice to Management

Hopefully by 2015, they have updated the OS, but if they haven't: Spend a little money on updating employee computers on the testing floor. Yes, Windows 95 may still work for logging in hours and running product tests, but come on. . . an update would make those tests run a lot faster & would save the company money & time.

    Pros

    Advice to Management

Empower human resources to help with employee relations.

    Pros

People are friendly. Carrier products are at par with industry

    Cons

No career growth whatsoever. Some unhealthy politics, zero direction or positive motivation from executive management.

    Advice to Management

Nobody is truly happy here. Only seem to hear from the CEO when someone dies.

I worked at ADTRAN full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Very stable place. People are very friendly. Nice place to work.

    Cons

Not replacing people, just adding responsibilities to another person upon another persons departure. I watched as one manager took on 3 position that were never replaced. They dont do alot of capital improvement. Will band aide things forever instead of fixing the root cause which in the long term cost more money. So much profit margin 60% that they dont notice the small costs that add up..More interested in stockholder return that employees having updated equipment to work with.

    Advice to Management

Fix your equipment instead of band aide approach. Invest in new equipment instead of nursing 25 yr old machines and obselete equipment to make your employees work easier to perform. Close the facility down during snow events instead of saying use your best judgement about coming in when every other employer closes due to extreme weather. Your people are your capital, dont risk their lives when it doesnt make sense.

I have been working at ADTRAN full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Great coworkers and facilities
    Good cafeteria

    Cons

Heavily understaffed and poor compensation compaired to rest of companies in the area
Lack of career path and advancement unless you join the ever growing group of first level management
Company tends to value reacting instead of strategic plnning. This may be due to managers becoming more insular and territorial over the years.
Heavy turnover in talent in the last 2-1/2 years

    Advice to Management

Visit more often with the design and test engineers. Until you regain the lost trust of your creative talent, you will never truely understand the reasons for the increased turnover. And giving a presentation once a year where your first words are your name and title, since many new hires have never even seen you before, does not constitute a valid or sincere visit.
