"Wouldn't work for AECOM even if last company on earth"

I worked at AECOM full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    * Good pay and benefits
    * Talented technical staff, iconic projects

    Cons

    * Several rude and disrespectful people – the most I’ve encountered in my three decades of working. People new to the company start out nice and working collaboratively, then over time the work environment wears on them, turning them into the darker sides of themselves.
    * Top heavy management – everyone and their brother is a VP or higher, even with little experience. If you’re not in the club, you’re most likely treated poorly and ignored.
    * Good luck keeping your job if you’re over age 50 – unless of course, you bring in revenue – then you’re still one of the Golden Children. Heavy on Millennials, probably due to cheaper wages.
    * No employee loyalty or consideration of seniority unless you pull in revenue; support staff treated poorly, unless of course you’re in the VP club.
    * Siloed cliques – If you’re in a good one, consider yourself lucky. If you’re not, you might consider looking to transfer or work elsewhere.
    * Overly trendy and hip – speaks disingenuousness
    * Some of the legacy companies were great to work for until they were acquired, then went downhill over time. My first 7 years at one of the legacy companies was great, then it was mostly negative after that (after AECOM took over).
    * My advice to current and future employees – don’t give too much to the company – in fact, use it as much as possible to your advantage (like they do to you) because you’ll need to take all that with you when you’re given the boot.

I worked at AECOM (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good salary standards and benefits

    Cons

Office politics, if you do not play their game, you are out! Not by how good you are! Bad office location in downtown area with no transportation...

    Advice to Management

It seems like the whole architectural group for NJ & NY is being controlled by few people and those few people has no ideas on what is going on and absolutely have no experiences on architecture and what management is about, rather just concentrate on Excel Spread Sheets and not the actual architectural works! but whoever comply with them that one will become their favor and stay! All the people have worked with the one person have left and the entire architectural team is gone. All architectural staffs are less than 2 years there include one of the head management! They do not appreciate good people but only in-house office politics! The two people thinks they own the group, sad! They will let you go because they do not like you or they think they are being threaten!

    I worked at AECOM full-time

    Pros

    Good benefits
Ability to move around within the organization

    Cons

Very aggressive culture with little recognition for a demanding workload
Responsibilities are not shared among team members
Management tends to place blame on junior level staff
Lack of processes, including a review process for projects or reports submitted to C-level executives
I was told not to expect a salary increase or bonus given my short tenure (I started 4 months before year end). I didn't stay long enough to see if this was actually true.
Performance review cycle is not prioritized by team management or upper level management

I worked at AECOM (More than a year)

    Pros

Competitive compensation with other engineering consulting firms, flexible for remote work.

    Cons

Silos between business lines, lack of career development and stingy when it comes to classes or conferences, losing technical leads and therefore losing interesting and challenging engineering projects so most of work focused on standard remediation projects, lack of management direction.

    Pros

They have very impressive AEC projects around the globe.

    Cons

Short-term decision making to meet Wall Street numbers has outsourced or eliminated 10%-20% of the company in 2015-2017.

    Advice to Management

Care about the details because you don't - not in HR, AP, and many other departments

    Pros

Unlimited resources; excellent salaries and benefits

    Cons

Bottomline number company. Will downsize without notice based on billability. Cumbersome software tools to track projects.

    Advice to Management

Discuss business plan with workers, especially with mid-level project managers, on how to improve billability

    I worked at AECOM full-time

    Pros

    Great work environment
    Lots of experience gained
    Opportunities for travel

    Cons

Very low pay compared to similar jobs with other companies
    Extremely high cost insurance
    No room for advancement
Raises are less than increase in insurance costs each year

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the 3% average raise for each department
    Reduce cost of insurance
Set guidelines for advancement. All advancements are determined by immediate supervisor and their boss. They can come up with any excuse not to promote an employee.

I have been working at AECOM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Above average technology to work with, good technical staff and technical managers to work with. Corporate Management (above the business lines) appears to be pretty good.

    Cons

Senior management is relatively poor in certain business lines. Appear to be out of touch with the operations and clients. Generally executive/senior management in business lines are very short term thinkers. Poor business transparency with staff and front line management.

    Advice to Management

In business lines under performing replace senior and executive managers. The performance will not change until new leadership is introduced that takes businesses in a different direction. Learn to inspire the staff and enhance working together across business lines. Think long term (years) for investments and strategy.
