I worked at AECOM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fair compensation, flexible schedules, supportive and talented coworkers (but these pros are due to the positive local culture established by the long-term local staff and leadership, not AECOM's own corporate culture).

    Cons

Very old-school hierarchy, male-centered organization with obsessive focus on shareholder value at the expense of other stakeholders such as employees, clients, the end-users, or the community. A one-size fits all project management and accounting mandate regardless of project size or scope, such as insisting that a $10,000 project be managed using the same methods as a $10,000,000 project. Out of state executives have little, if any, knowledge of the talents, competencies, client relationships, marketing abilities, etc. of the staff who enable the companies' success, yet they routinely circumvent the local management's input when deciding which staff to cut. Such decisions are made solely on salary/billable utilization while ignoring the dollar value of long-term relationships/repeat clients, team cohesion, and the impact of forcing highly effective staff to go to work for competing firms.

    Advice to Management

In the six years after acquiring the Minneapolis practice, there were no less than four changes to region organization, discipline names, leadership and reporting structure; senior management were installed and removed (fired) on a routine basis so there was no continuity of expectations. As long as share price trumps the importance of a proven design process, project quality, deliverable schedules, client service and employee satisfaction, AECOM will be nothing more than a large, mediocre engineering firm.

I have been working at AECOM (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Steady work and government pay

    Cons

the likely hood of getting hired if you are not related to a supervisor is pretty nil. Most supervisors have their wives, kids, and their spouses working there...regardless of their ability to do the job or their experience.

    Advice to Management

hire people that know how to do the job, not because they are related to someone.

I worked at AECOM as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good introduction to working for a large company
    Great company culture
    Great compensation

    Cons

No mentoring given to interns of university level

    Advice to Management

Have a summer project for interns with a time for introductory training at the beginning of the summer.

I worked at AECOM full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

AECOM bought URS and the Houston offices were combined into the new offices off of the Katy Freeway. Management is working hard to merge the processes, systems and methodology for the two firms. Due to the economic downturn, there were a lot of layoffs. Legacy URS adopted AECOMs policy of giving an employee advance notice of a pending reduction in force, instead of the standard, no advance notification. As a manager, this practice was easier to share with affected employees.

    Cons

Lots of layoffs and office closures in the O&G service line so morale was very low. It became evident that AECOM did not want to invest in this market after it became apparent that it was not a profitable business and it was just a matter of time before one's department was affected.

    Advice to Management

Try to stabilize the workforce as soon as possible so that employees can feel valuable. As a matter of fact, as a large employer, strive to be "One of the Best Places to Work". Benefits are very moderate.

I have been working at AECOM full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Steady shifts, fairly laid back atmosphere, benefits, a cafe is available for lunch and breakfast on site, they provide us with some basic hand tools.

    Cons

Poor communication amongst technicians and managers, not much room for growth, limited training, the focus is on completing work orders to reach a quota more than doing work correctly.

    Advice to Management

Get more technicians on board and figure out a way to perform better training and instruction to your new hires.

I worked at AECOM full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good people, good procedures. I felt good knowing there were knowledgable people on my project teams while at URS/Aecom. It's not often these days you find any level of comfort with EPC companies. At least I can speak of a positive experience in the Houston office.

    Cons

In my experience it did not seem as if the company had much luck winning work. The layoffs were frequent during my last year with the company.

    Advice to Management

Win more work in order to develop and keep a strong team.

I have been working at AECOM full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I meet many extremely talented specialists, and work on nation wide teams. I see how companies manage large numbers of people. We have had some change, and I have had growth opportunities.

    Cons

We have a system for everything- invoicing, tracking budgets, using subcontractors, etc. these systems are for metrics regarding the company's wealth. There are no systems for mentoring, training, or growing careers- those activities don't contribute to the stock value.

    Advice to Management

    Value and validate employees.
