I worked at AEGIS Insurance Services full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

it is a small company and you will get your hands dirty experiencing everything if this is what you wish; benefits are great and work life balance is excellent

    Cons

male-dominated corporate culture with a focus on favoritism rather than skills. Training is based on who you know not what you know or whether you should be trained. Human Resources is ineffectual.

    Advice to Management

Overhaul human resource & training policies so they're actually fair. create clear career paths and job titles with job descriptions..was told I likely got the job "for my looks"

    Pros

Good career advancement opportunities. Great people to work with. Flexible work hours are available to staff to assist with family issues

    Cons

Too much uncertainty with respect to job security. Certain Sen.ior Management official is viewed as a corporate bully

    Advice to Management

Don't let one person tarnish the image of a company that was once one of the best companies to work for.

I have been working at AEGIS Insurance Services full-time

    Pros

    Bagel fridays (Free!)
Commuter, gym perks and bi-annual company events
A lot of well-seasoned employees keep this machine relatively well-oiled (It's easy to take that for granted)
Projects abound especially in the summer. Very few perpetual ones; practical goal-setting

    Cons

Bagel Fridays (Usually doughy and hard!)
Micro-management. This is where drones are created from humans just from sheer micro managing
Gladiator-style "put 'em down" annual performance review process
Horrible location for lunch (limited to a rather subpar cafeteria) but like prison-food, you might begin to acquire a taste for it.
Favoritism is the rule of the day for a select-few
Wide gap between the "rulers" (management") and the "paupers" (non-management)
Relatively flat organization. Hence, more lateral shuffle than vertical movements
If you are dealing with other divisions, get ready for the motherload of bureaucracy and politic-ing
Might be tough for new-comers. Lots of tacit knowledge; documentation is improving however.
Not a lot of sides to take, be care not to fall on the wrong side. It's just too small a place
There is not much of any social aspect to working here. As usual, there are small little clicks here and there

    Advice to Management

Micro-managing can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. Otherwise self-motivated employees can become dumbed down to robots that take instructions. As for those that require the micro-managing, they will continue to, as it becomes almost expected of the nature of the employee-manager relationship.
Advice: Provide opportunities for employees to take lead roles (with remote supervision) and develop them.

    Pros

Relatively less stress for most departments.

    Cons

Who you know and what you can get away with.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to your department's morale. If they are chronically late and look like they want to be anywhere else, you have a bigger problem than you think.

    Pros

    Well regarded by customers (owners).

    Cons

Lacks urgency to deliver. Standard process designs are put on the shelf and not followed. Too much drama for a small organization.

    Advice to Management

More commitment to projects. Make decisions. Communicate to employees

    Pros

Mostly great people and office environment; while insurance isn't "exciting" there is stability within the insurance sector.

    Cons

Power plays between upper/middle management and executives (as always) but they effect the landscape and moral of the office negatively. Certain managers not attune to the needs of the departments (i.e. staffing issues, over working employees) There are preferential employees, that no matter how badly they do their job, they are continually protected. Nepotism is rather big too.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within; think about staffing needs; stop protecting people not actively working or contributing to the overall goals of the company; recognize those who do a lot of good work.
