I worked at AEP full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nearly everyone that works at AEP is reliable and competent compared to other places I've work. I worked at 1 Riverside Plaza and loved the people I worked with.

    Cons

Maybe a little too big. Too much managerial position swapping, affect everyone below them negatively.

I have been working at AEP full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The culture that the company aspires to is outstanding. When compared to many other companies in this vertical industry, AEP stands apart as a progressive utility company.

    Cons

From an information technology perspective, the company has been very slow to evolve -- both in terms of development and implementation methodologies and in terms of staying current with computing equipment (e.g., they haven't replaced employee workstations in over 6 years).

Additionally, there is a fair amount of silo-ism in the company -- making enterprise-wide initiatives particularly difficult to execute.

Finally, the company has put forth major effort to promote women and minorities. While commendable, there are many instances of promotional candidates being chosen based on their demographics rather than their qualifications.

    Advice to Management

1.) Develop a technology replacement policy that doesn't significantly adversely impact the productivity of your employees.
2.) Identify management who are roadblocks to enterprise-wide efforts and calibrate them.
3.) Re-evaluate the incentives you have put in place to reward management for promoting women and minorities specifically -- lest you overlook more qualified candidates.

I have been working at AEP full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The salary is high compared to the cost of living for the area. The other major employer in the region is Whirlpool however they have a higher turnover for engineers. Major culture change initiative also made it a more positive work environment.

AEP has a very large service territory so it's easy to find other opportunities within the company.

    Cons

Nuclear power is a highly regulated industry so projects and work moves at a snail's pace. Nothing can be done without proper procedure, training, and qualification. Be sure to accept this as it's a condition of employment.

It's challenging to maintain a decent balance between work and life. There's mountains of work to do so prioritize effectively if you ever want to keep your hours below 50/week.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up
