I have been working at AEP full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits and stability, kind coworkers.

    Cons

Lots of people who need to retire keep holding on.
People in satellite offices (aka outside of Ohio) get treated like second rate citizens.

    Advice to Management

Release another retire package please. Provide more opportunities for people outside of Ohio.

I have been working at AEP as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good people to work around. A lot of learning potential, a lot of knowledge to feed any questions you might have. They are very understanding if you need to take some time off to look for other jobs if they don't end up having any openings.

    Cons

A lot of down time. Don't get a lot of opportunities to get hands on without someone doing it for you. Some "mindless" tasks given because you are an intern and can't be left alone to do actual electrical/electronics work. With down sizing don't feel surprised if you feel like you're just some summer help.

    Advice to Management

Be more engaged with interns. Try to provide as much learning material as you can. After all you did sign up for them being here to gain knowledge.

    Cons

    Strong Status Quo and Favoritism
Promotions are based more on people skills and soft skills than technical skills
Very stagnant and reluctant to change

    Advice to Management

Hire knowledgeable people into management not your friends

I worked at AEP full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good medical plan but lousy dental and vision. The monthly costs you pay for the dental and vision coverage doesn't cover enough on certain procedures, you end up paying a large out of pocket sum.

    Cons

Management is top heavy, one employee could have up to four supervisors at any time and with neither of them communicating with each other, confusion is always present. Most managers and supervisors have been given their positions by the "who you know" method and not by education or experience. The company continues to downsize to the point of overworking employees and enforcing a completion time for projects with minimum employees performing the work. This creates dangerous situations and impedes safety practices and if an accident does occur the employee is terminated. They say they have a "stop work" program, but if you invoke this practice the supervisors become infuriated and create inappropriate jobs for you to accomplish. They are only there to fill their pockets, not perform a service to the community.

    Advice to Management

Train you managers better or send them packing

I have been working at AEP full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Was a great company to work for, valued it's employees, excellent benefits, safety a big focus. Employees took pride in their work

    Cons

Not working in Columbus held back corporate employees located at other locations

    Advice to Management

No advice, but I think the 2013 re-alignment did a disservice to many hard working employees. Jobs that were posted as 'available to affected employees only' never really seemed to exist
