I worked at AICPA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible work, okay benefits, some nice people.

    Cons

Non-CPA staff are often treated like vendors for the CPA staff. Very political and can be cutthroat, management turns a blind eye because it keeps people fighting amongst themselves and extra competitive/productive. Promotions seem random and dependant on who you are friends with. Senior management is inaccessible and rarely seen. You're on your own, basicaly an independent contractor.

    Advice to Management

Show your faces once in a while and help staff understand what it is you do. Impart professional knowledge and develop staff. Stop acting like kings and queens.

    I worked at AICPA full-time

    Pros

AICPA is a fast paced company that is currently going through a lot of change which is great for those that want to gain a lot of experience quick. If you can find the time, there are a lot of opportunities to "lean in" and help in other areas or on one of the large initiatives that is in process.

    Cons

AICPA is a perfection driven environment fueled by the many Accountants and Auditors that have come from the large consulting companies. With the amount of change that they are experiencing, the good is not good enough mentality can make AICPA a very frustrating and thankless place to work. Many of the senior leaders do not regularly demonstrate a commitment to your success; instead they reinforce a "we will beat you down to make you stronger" mentality. This way of doing business may work at some established places like Deloitte, PWC, et cetera, but AICPA is far from the level of those places.

    Advice to Management

I strongly recommend that you develop a level of focus and discipline that is needed in order to navigate the change that is ahead of you. Due to the lack of investment in your infrastructure and core systems 5-10 years ago underneath sub-par leadership, you are now trying to "boil the ocean" and catch up and it does not work that way. Get your strong teams to come together and focus on a few strategic initiatives, execute on them, rinse and repeat. Listen to your executive coaches you contract with... slow is smooth and smooth is fast!

I worked at AICPA (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good mission for those who are passionate about accounting.
Great facilities for employees with some amenities.
Decent benefits for size of company.
Some really great people who care about accounting and fun to work with.

    Cons

Company culture is probably the worst I have ever seen unless you like backstabbing, politics and bullying. Most of the executive management despise each other. Half of them shouldn't even be in management positions or considered "leaders". Company constantly preaches inclusive, innovative, fail fast and progressive culture, but executive management never really does or supports anything that leads to material change. Instead you will get ridiculed, setup for failure and kicked while you're down.

Everyone here complains about one department or another, but this problem is pervasive throughout the entire company. As a result, the company consistently misuses resources, makes poor decisions and struggles to stay innovative and relevant.

What cracks me up is that the members really don't care what the AICPA does. Just ask any CPA outside the organization that's not part of a big firm (which is most of the membership). All that keeps the members renewing each year is the discounted benefits they get. Not really the products and services that AICPA provides. This may be because the executive management only wants to focus on revenue over quality, relevance or service.

    Advice to Management

The CEO really needs to engage the employees (not just in ceremony) instead of just his team. He must start to really hold his team and the rest of management accountable for their actions (or lack thereof) and the impacts it's having on the company's culture. The recent changes are just going to exacerbate the underlying problems with this company. So much potential....
