    Advice to Management

Quit firing all the talent to temporarily improve the bottom line, which is just contributing to a death spiral

    Pros

Because of its sheer size combined with the law of averages - you'll encounter very bright and talented people.

    Cons

A rudderless ship with uninspired leadership; again because of its sheer size, you'll encounter a large number of curmudgeons and ne'er-do-wells without the accountability piece to get them in line. A monolithic giant that lacks the ability to pivot to new facts. And chances are, you'll be caught in a "RIF" (reduction in force) scenario within 6-12 months. The technology infrastructure is awful.

    Advice to Management

Management? There's management? Blow up the company and figure out what the heck it is you want to do. Once you figure that out - build a company with a capable, scalable, and talented IT department. Oh - then you might want to remember that there are people who work for you and you should probably help them succeed.

I have been working at AIG full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of energy and efforts are taking place in the employee engagement, productivity, and innovation areas. Very positive direction being set by senior leadership teams in connecting with employees and setting the tone for the future.

    Cons

The shareholder pressure and goal of meeting the cost reduction targets are taking the toll retaining the talent within the company. A lot of time being spent in determining department level key priorities and aligning them with overall AIG strategy. There are lots of opportunity to shine or get recognized, however the fame is not getting converted into career upward mobility or monetary benefit.

    Advice to Management

Invest in existing employee talent pool and enable a platform to make it easier for employees to align with projects that are funded.

    Pros

People (not the high level management)
Opportunities: in times of crisis, many opportunities come out, not in terms of salary but in terms of responsibilities, as much as you want

    Cons

Underwriting hasn't been lately as valued as it used to be and now high level management imposes wrong underwriting strategies that are hurting the portfolios

    Advice to Management

Listen more, stop imposing wrong strategies

I have been working at AIG full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

There are people there who genuinely care and want to believe and do what they can to make the company a good place to work.

    Cons

When you think morale can't get worse, it does. Institutional memory is not valued. There's just a lot of flailing as they try and figure out what direction they're headed.

    Advice to Management

Concentrate on the insurance business and remember that it was the employees who made the company what it once was.

    Pros

Great Company, Great Opportunities, Global Reach. Once you are in the firm there are a lot of opportunities to move around.

    Cons

Too focused on cost cutting vs. growth, too many changes at Senior Management level, It seems that they are a little lost at this time. New CEO, New CIO, etc...

    Advice to Management

Get focused, Get stable. Focus on growth vs. cost cutting. Cost cutting is leading to greater operational risk.
