I worked at AK Steel Holding Corporation (More than a year)

    Pros

Honor system for pay, ability to work overtime.

    Cons

they terminate for silly reasons, ex: not holding handrail or using scissors incorrectly.

    Pros

Cant really think of a good pro other then the pay, I guess it is one of the better steel plants in the area.

    Cons

Vary dangerous, long hours; a eight-hour day is like a vacation. also if someone does not show up for their shift or calls off you have to work it.

I worked at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Avoid process control engineering at this company. I was able to find a much better opportunity at an automaker with better pay, atmosphere, and benefits.

I was hesitant going in due to the high turnover rate in the department - turns out this worry was well-founded.

Only positive for this job was that it was a short drive from home, albeit that was on Rotunda Dr., which is completely crumbling and a terrible drive.

    Cons

Super boring database interfacing type work - NO intellectual stimulation and EXTREMELY limited learning potential.

Very antiquated technology (still using Unix distribution from 80s)
Very poor application build and deployment processes - certainly have not kept up with modern tools and methodology. I would expect more from "process engineering"
Complete lack of onboarding for new hires within department.
Complete lack of documentation for existing code.
Complete lack of coding standards - for instance global variable usage and using returned local variables from function calls. Procedural code, not OO.

Poorly planned and executed projects. Only now is the department working on tracking of steel pieces through quality testing. Way overdue. That is something simple and cheap that should've been done years ago. The software is so fragmented now it ought to be entirely scrapped and redesigned (see advice to management)

Environmental issues - will certainly develop breathing issues such as chronic sinusitis or asthma, potentially even lung cancer, for working here long term due to heavy particulate exposure.
    Windowless office with slow computers

Very high turnover rate creates a young and inexperienced staff. Expect D grade programmers here - many of whom don’t have compsci or electrical engineering background.
Many in department spend inordinate amount of time resolving issues of blue collar worker incompetence or design issues with software they made.

Complete lack of accommodation for family related matters. Expect to be on call 24/7/365

Steel industry has a very negative future due to overproduction and the company is losing substantial amounts of money - expect layoffs/plant closure eventually.

The Dearborn location mainly supplies automotive - since automotive industry is moving towards aluminum, carbon fiber and high strength plastics - you can expect this plant will suffer in the future. Not a place to make a career.
In addition, this plant's basic oxygen furnace will likely be shut down by state due to heavy particulate release. This will cripple the plant.

Highly dangerous work environment. Quite a few deaths, dismemberments, and serious injuries have occurred over the past 20 years. For example, employee orientation indicated that before Severstal was purchased, the Dearborn facility had over 100 reportable injuries in a year while AK Steel as a whole had just 6 companywide (multiple plants).

High insurance cost- and expected to be higher in future.
Long vesting period on employer matching 401k contributions. Due to the high turnover, you'll never see these.
Invasive Hair follicle drug testing during pre employment physical. Wear a wig.
Random vehicle searches by Ford security
Forced purchase of boots by company - this should be provided.

    Advice to Management

Replace entire process control department - especially at the top, with experienced engineers. Make smart investments in technology to improve process - not bandaids which are currently being used. Provide clear expectations and documentation to new hires. Redesign systems utilizing modern standards to reduce issues.

I worked at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay was pretty decent, my co-worker were pretty nice, the benefits were good and I didn't have to pay for my uniforms also they have a boot allowance

    Cons

The way the company took over sevestal after they bought it... It was less than desirable... They came in and used safety policies as a way to punish the employees instead of using it to help and teach the employees

    Advice to Management

You cannot come in and make the drastic changes that you are trying to make.. I know it is your company but you should work with the employees to help get the plant to a better place

I have been working at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay rates are okay, but lower than industry standard for the licensed boiler operators. The industry standard is around $30 / hour and the company starts operators about $25 after incentive is factored in. 5 years in, you'll see $28.

    Cons

The culture at AK Steel is one of "us against them" with regard to management's relationship with hourly personnel. There is little respect going in either direction.

    Advice to Management

Steve Jobs once said, "It doesn't make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do. We hire smart people so they can tell us what to do." Consider his brilliance.

    Pros

Decent pay and benefits, plenty of overtime.

    Cons

Ridiculous safety measures, they want to make a federal case out of the smallest incidents , employees wont even go to dispensary to ask for a bandaid for fear of losing their job . Make you wear unneeded, uncomfortable ata sleeves and leg guards to do your job at all times and dont ask any questions or else.

    Advice to Management

Let the plant operate as it has for the past 50 years before you bought it,stop micro management, your ruining the moral of everyone,

I have been working at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are top notch. Pay is commensurate with industry standard, if not slightly above. Plenty of overtime for trades and other hourly positions.

    Cons

Lack of respect for hourly workers. Safety philosophy is annoyingly insulting and discipline driven. Salaried employees in the plants are required to write a few hourly employees up for safety violations every day. They can, ostensibly, write up safety observations of hourly employees exercising or displaying "proper" safety behavior, but in reality, hourly heads must roll. Citations include "not touching handrail while ascending stairs", "not having pinky through safety sleeve hole", "not having sufficient blousing of pant leg over legging", "earplugs not inserted enough", "walking on ice patch after applying salt", and "second from top shirt button not buttoned up".

    Advice to Management

The safety culture must be transformed from the top down to encourage GENUINE concern for the health, safety, and well being (mental/Emotional/Familial) of all employees. Respect for all employees must be shown. Stop doing the legal minimum with respect to quality of life measures for hourly workers. Foster a constructive safety environment where reason is employed and people want to perform safely and at their best. Stop accusing people of drug and alcohol use every time something goes wrong. Stop being confrontational and aggressive regarding safety.

I have been working at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Money is really good after being there 12 years.

    Cons

Forced to work 12-16 hrs a day. Moral is horrible, even alot of bosses out in the mill don't even like company. Company goes through as much salary as it does hourly anymore, that's pretty pathetic if you ask a lot of people.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees like their someone important to the company and not like a piece of dirt that they can replace with someone one else for $12 a hour.
