I have been working at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

In my current position, job flexibility is great but be prepared to put the time in (and extra time) when required / expected. The health benefits are excellent - I have stayed with the company for much longer than desired because of these benefits.

    Cons

Militant safety program - don't trip or you'll be sent out for a drug test. Management doesn't value employee experience at all (if you won't do it, they'll find someone else who will). The company treats the hourly employess like they're idiots.

    Advice to Management

Quit worrying about you 'executive compensation' and pay the people who actually do the work. How many VPs and executive VPs does a company need?

I worked at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time

    Pros

The coworkers are mostly great. The pay was pretty good. Every day proved to have new challenges, and it was personally rewarding to rise to the occasion. The company strives for a safe work environment.

    Cons

The hours are long and work can be difficult. The plant is a very dirty and dangerous place, despite the safety regulations. The safety rules are so stringent that it is almost a certainty you will break one.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the office and look around.

I have been working at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Location. Makes world quaity product.

    Cons

Low pay, high demands, company does not make profit and does not pay bonuses.

    Advice to Management

Treat people better and pay them enough that they will not walk with their experience. Upper management does not understand how technical the job is and only focuses on simple safety rules. They let people walk due minimal pay. They act as if our jobs are easy to replace probably since upper management can be replaced so easily. They understand dollars and cents, not steel. A few people in each department hold the place together at a time the company is pushing for survival.

I worked at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-A great place to work as an intern and gain relative hands-on experience and knowledge.
-Above-average wages for an engineering intern.
-No physical work involved, but you will learn a lot!

    Cons

-The place is dirty inside and out. It's just not a good environment to work in.
-The supervisors sometimes seem to view the intern's work as less important, so it's hard to get any help. I have been waiting for months for my original project to be installed.
-Supervisors will sometimes hand down paperwork to the intern that they don't want to deal with.
-If you break safety rules, you are at risk of getting fired.
-I have experienced co-workers that are very vulgar and offensive.

    Advice to Management

You are way too close-minded sometimes about things such as safety regulations.
Way too many employees are overworked.

    Pros

Salary!!! They are good at what they do - bring in talent and get what they can out of you and send you along with MONEY in hand for your troubles.

    Cons

Coming from the military, I found navigating the corporate culture to be the greatest challenge. The values and codes that we lived by in the military doesn't exist here. Check your loyalty at the door and understand the nature of revolving door that you have entered. You will stay as long as the money outweighs the lack of upward mobility, lack of professional development, and lack of respect.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with potential employees, especially military.

I have been working at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Fantastic plant manager that truly cares about every employee both hourly and salary. Good teams of hourly and salary groups work together to fix issues in the plant. Starting salary was fair and raises are definitely merit based. If you work hard and show worth to the company and try to improve raises will come easily. Shift managers use the safety improvement program very effectively. The safety observation system in theory is a fantastic tool but it is not used correctly in the company.

    Cons

Safety quota system that is used by corporate to justify its safety rating is useless. For every 100 department observations 1 unsafe act must be found or there are repercussions to the management group. Managers cannot find real safety issues because hourly workers will get time off. Near misses are also not reported due to possible repercussions versus trying to learn and fix issues. Accident investigations are almost always the fault of person involved (hourly). The real root cause of accidents are not always found because violations are almost always due to worker not following a JSHA. Right now the maintenance workforce is severely understaffed in most departments and the corporation wants to limit the amount of contractors doing maintenance on site. There is also an unrealistic expectation to do more with less when it comes to getting maintenance done and expecting equipment to last. Temporary repairs are only going to last so long. Safety training needs to be changed so it is more effective and not all shift managers are capable of giving training.

    Advice to Management

Hire more hourly maintenance personnel. Overhaul the safety observation system and monthly safety training. Having to find unsafe acts is the one thing that completely drove me away from this company. If it was done differently i would still work there.

    Pros

Large market share, expanding, full-line of steel related products, US based company.

    Cons

Bureaucracy, paranoia at every level of management chain, encouraged to treat floor employees as sub-human.

    Advice to Management

Enact management-worker groups in the areas of safety, production, quality, ect similar to the work groups enacted successfully in the automotive industry (eg VW, Ford...).

    Pros

Structure, safe work environment, stability due to being a large company

    Cons

Overreaction to safety incidents, bureaucracy, the "we've always done it this way" attitude, unengaged hourly workforce, communication within and between plants

    Advice to Management

Follow through with the safety-quality-production order. Too many times, I see production trumping quality. "If we're not seeing many claims from our customers, we need to start letting more material ship."

I have been working at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working on improving internal advancement programs. Seem to be getting better at motivating with positive feedback and less negative motivational techniques. Good benefits.

    Cons

Still losing money. Can't do that forever. Still a challenging place to work though. Not for the faint of heart...
