I have been working at ALS full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

Great people to work with and a lot of commitment from our team members. Our jobs are challenging and ever changing with a new problem to solve every day. The good people make that enjoyable. The culture has been changing to encourage more process improvement and critical thinking. This has been great to see. There's a new emphasis on people development which has led to new opportunities for learning and development...

I worked at ALS full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

If you are motivated enough you can learn anything. Assuming you want experience on instruments so old there are no replacement parts. Also the people are good people even if they are stressed to their breaking point 9 months out of the year.

    Cons

Corporate only cares about the bottom line. Which is funny because they waste so much money retraining people they can't keep because they don't pay them enough, and expect them to work in a highly stressful and often unsafe environment. They also refuse to buy new instruments while employees waste days or weeks trying to fix instruments that manufacturers will not cover because they are so old they expect you to have...

    Advice to Management

Your employees are people and they deserve to be treated as such. When the car washing company down the street is offering 3-5$ an hour more than a lab tech would make, maybe you should look at your so-called "competitive" pay rates. Instead of building a new building because you want the lab to look fancy, maybe replace the ancient instruments so analysts can do their job more efficiently. If you paid people a living...

I have been working at ALS full-time

    Pros

    Flexible hours and nothing else

    Cons

Too many to list. ALS Simi Valley location is a toxic place to work. Lots of favoritism, discrimination. Some people get promoted 3 times a year, others don’t even have a chance to apply for position. Worst management. Maybe other ALS labs are ok, but not Simi.

    Advice to Management

Stop the favoritism and be fair!

I have been working at ALS full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Job security--employee turnover is so high that they can't afford to fire anyone

    Cons

Poor pay--no merit based raises (only about 2% raises per year for "cost of living"), and no bonuses Dysfunctional management with questionable competence No HR on site--personal issues, nepotism, and cliques determine who gets promoted No IT on site--operating systems, chemstation versions, and hardware infrastructure are extremely outdated, with no improvement in sight.

    Advice to Management

Reward employees who show ambition instead of burning them out. Learn to be open to change. Old ways are often NOT best. Your financial planning is tragically short-sighted. Management, technology, and HR are full-time jobs. Stop making them added responsibilities for people who are already working full jobs. They don't get done.
