    I worked at AMD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    * Great work-life balance
    * Flexible work schedule
    * Smart engineers

    Cons

    * Bureaucratic career advancement (must wait in line for seniority, do this for X years, etc.)
    * As a Sr. Engineer, feels like I'm a cog in a machine
    * Small raises; it pays to job hop if financial compensation is what you're after

    I worked at AMD as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

    higher pay than usual, more than 8 hours is not expected, and people are generally very smart and good at what they do. Most employees come from companies where they've been burnt out or used.

    Cons

    stock price is all over the place, the cafeteria is pretty mediocre, health insurance plans keep getting worse, and AMD has been struggling to find good leadership/vision in recent years. Bonuses are more or less non-existent.

    Advice to Management

    find a CEO that's not just there to hold the reigns until the next CEO takes over. Lisu Su seems pretty good so maybe she's the answer.

    I have been working at AMD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great place to work and learn.

    Cons

    Frequent changes in plan, management, etc.

    Advice to Management

    Be focused. If the executives are there to just build their high profile career by doing nonsense experiments, they are hurting a company which has a great history.

    I have been working at AMD as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Good work-life balance
    Friendly and relaxed atmosphere

    Cons

    I was only a summer intern, but there were no signs of helping employees "gel" with one another - saw few if any company-sponsored events

    Advice to Management

    Again, only was an intern, but they could possibly work to keep different teams on the same page and connected as well as build morale through out of office activities.

    I worked at AMD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    AMD is full of great people to work with. They're smart, dedicated, and fun. The technology that they produce is top-notch. They have a lot of good safeguards in place so that engineering mistakes don't get through into products.

    Cons

    AMD always seems to be struggling to gain recognition from consumers and respect from PC manufacturers. This is reflected in their low market share. Gamers love the Radeon graphics cards, but that's a relatively small market. With PC sales declining, it's a race to see whether AMD can make up the sales by breaking into new markets.

    Advice to Management

    Getting design flows to work reliably was always a challenge. The CAD group is understaffed and/or focusing on the wrong things.

    PC and more importantly server market is still very big to give up.

    Pros

    Smart and competent colleagues. Interesting and challenging projects. Open atmosphere with lots of opportunities to make an impact. Abundant compute and license resources for most jobs. Reasonable work/life balance with flexible hours. Good telecommuting infrastructure.

    Cons

    The company has been struggling financially the last few years. Unpleasant actions such as layoff rounds, salary cuts, and mandatory vacations have occurred at various times. Bonus payouts have been low or non-existent due to poor financial performance. Road map has been unstable with project cancellations as a result.

    Advice to Management

    Size resources to project goals properly to ensure a high chance of success. Avoid constant road map changes.

    I have been working at AMD full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    The company has many smart people, fosters a culture of meritocracy within the engineering teams, and supports development of employees.

    Cons

    It's always been tough to ride the endless waves of boom and bust cycles in the ever changing computer industry.

    Advice to Management

    Focus on innovation leadership, emphasizing more low power design, restoring the server business and investing in staffing for long term strength.
