I have been working at AMD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many good things about this company, including:

    - People
    - Projects
    - Competitive Salaries
    - No micro-management

    Cons

There is only one big negative: The company is having financial issues and is doing on-going restructuring and layoffs. Unfortunately, the only way you find out people are gone is when your email to them (and their boss?) goes unanswered.

    Advice to Management

Make it easier to find out that people are gone so that you don't impact the ability of the remaining folks to be productive.

I have been working at AMD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people (peers and Directors), great benefits especially health, good cafeteria on site, Starbucks on site, paid vacation (15 days)

    Cons

Executives lack strategic outlook, process are not efficient, it takes extraordinary effort to achieve ordinary results, financial future is bleak

    Advice to Management

Advice to Executive management: stop reorging the company, instead look at the business decisions you are making and stop doing what you have been doing because clearly it is not working

I have been working at AMD as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Smart people
    Reasonable hours
No expectation to work on the weekend... The parking lot is empty on Saturday and Sunday.
Benefits for interns, e.g. health and dental insurance at heavily subsidized rates
Gym on site with some free classes

    Cons

Does not have startup culture if that's your thing.
    Almost no free food.

    Advice to Management

Product marketing and software support for the hardware products could be better.
Need to bring in more youthful talent to revitalize the workplace.

I worked at AMD as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Teammates and reporting managers have very good technical and interpersonal skills. They are kind and very helpful. Hiring managers are also friendly and very approachable. Not much work pressure in general. Interns/co-ops are given a lot of responsibility, so they get to learn a lot. It's a great place for beginners and new college grads to learn about architecture and micro-architecture of state-of-the-art CPUs.

    Cons

The company has been struggling financially since 2014. It also lost a lot of market share in PC and server CPU markets to Intel. It has been in a huge financial debt since a few years. Due to some poor decisions by senior management and fabrication screw-ups by Global Foundries has caused the company's poor performance in the CPU markets in the recent years.

    Advice to Management

It would be a good idea to increase the size of the design and verification teams so that the design cycles become shorter and products get launched without unnecessary delays.

I have been working at AMD (More than 5 years)

    Pros

People were alright, nothing much to add here.

    Cons

Company lost it's vision. Stock is tanking. Luckily I haven't been laid off yet. This company is in real trouble, I advise not buying AMD anytime soon as there has been a lot of chatter in the board room about AMD dropping it's GPU division and taking a huge loss. Morale is horrible right now and things are looking very grim. Also, Becky, if you're reading this, Dave has been steeling your lunch.

    Advice to Management

Too late for advice. Start looking for another job. Luckily I already have a gig lined up.

I worked at AMD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Not really any as they have fallen so far behind every other semiconductor company….it's sad to see a company that once cherished its position as the underdog who kept coming through with innovation to compete with Intel fall into malaise.

    Cons

Depressing, no time to innovate, no time to think, all decisions are about cost and how to stay alive in the short term.

I have been working at AMD full-time

    Pros

Expectations are pretty low for you, since most smart people either left or let off. That is, if you don't ask for promotion or compensation adjustments or bonuses.

    Cons

Old people. Old ideas. To be promoted, you should have been with the company for a long time and know the old-timers. Brown-nose the old guard: you will get promoted even almost every other year, even in these tough times. I am now looking outside. In the eight years, I worked here, I got a manager finally who I thought knew what we were doing. Recently the management let him go! He was modern in his style and was very innovative. I thought I had started enjoying work despite the financial conditions. The guy knew how to make remote employees work. He always went fighting for his engineers. But one day I came to work and I was told he had been let off! Now I am looking outside. But feels sad to leave because I love what I have been doing here. And, in Markham where I work, there is no other competing business. I am so damned with this management we are considering relocating now.

    Advice to Management

Your Directors, Sr Directors are screwing up the company. Get them under control to start with a good turn around! Cut more but cut smart.

    Pros

US-based company, provides lots of training to ensure personal development.

    Cons

Not applicable in terms of work culture. But only uncertainty of market response could cause insecure.
