I worked at AMN Healthcare full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of jobs for travel nurses

    Cons

Low pay, very high turnover, and long hours with regular overtime demanded from leadership. It is a hostile and catty environment with brown-nosers getting ahead by ratting out their fellow employees. Very sad to see the inside of a company that desperately shouts to the outside world about what a great company it is to work for when the reality is far from what is promised.

    Advice to Management

Treating employees well leads to happy people who will work hard to help you grow your business. Treating employees like disposable resources leads to unhappy people who leave quickly so that you have very high turnover. It is obvious you choose the latter path every single day.

    Cons

Commission is taxed like a bonus so you don’t get as much as they say you will

I have been working at AMN Healthcare full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some good benefits and some great people! It's possible to move within departments, but it has to be approved by your current manager.

    Cons

Unfortunately, many of the great people are under appreciated, overworked and underpaid by market analysis. AMN has extensive training about doing what is right for the customer vs the company, however, apparently management doesn't attend those same meetings.

    Advice to Management

No one feels safe going to HR, we all have seen what happens when you do. Make HR safe for employees and enforce the "no-retaliation" rule. The rule as it is written is too easy for managers to get around.

    Pros

Great people! Ability to grow within multiple service lines and locations! Education reimbursement. Diversity friendly. Management really cares.

    Cons

Pays mid range - you need to know that. You will be proud of your work. You will love what you do and the people you work with - but you won't make the most money.

    Advice to Management

Continue with what you are doing. You are transparent. You care. You do all you can to support your team members. I know my own leader would fight for me and supports me professionally and personally. A wonderful experience to have.

    Pros

AMN as a company has a lot going on.
PTO, benefits, vacation days are all pretty good.
The potential to earn good money is there.

    Cons

    The culture is non existent.
Leadership preaches innovation, but wont budge off old school sales techniques that do not translate to RPO recruiting.
At times the pressure of leadership creates a toxic work environment

    Advice to Management

Care more about your employees. Listen to them. Hire a new VP for RPO asap.

I worked at AMN Healthcare full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great location, matching 401k, in-house account management, very friendly people. A great place to kick start your career in recruitment.

    Cons

Micromanagement, total reliance on metrics, they only hire yes men for management roles, managers are highly inexperienced. They typically hire managers out of the ranks of high performing recruiters, which means that they may have little to no actual management experience. This is a highly political environment, and unless you play the game well you will not thrive. Favoritism is rampant, and in some cases it is so obvious it creates a hostile work environment for those who know they are not liked.

On a totally unrelated note, the cafeteria used to be as nice as an expensive restaurant, but then they remodeled and brought in cheap labor, and now it's basically the worst food you can hope to eat anywhere.

    Advice to Management

Don't get too big too fast. Quit hiring managers who don't know what they are doing. Work on retention of your existing work force. The answer is not to keep hiring as quickly as you can. Keep your experienced people. Treat everyone equally. Don't play favorites.

Also, bring back the company who used to run the cafeteria. Good food keeps employees happy.

I worked at AMN Healthcare full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The office accommodations that include on site gym, starbucks and cafe.

    Cons

Everything- You are overworked and underpaid. Your day consists of mainly having meetings about a meeting you already had, followed by redundant e mails about the previous meetings you just had. Management is a disaster and lost cause. Putting a bandaid on a bullet wound due to high turnover solves nothing. It creates more problems. They tell you when you're there that you have to be able to adapt to change and how quickly the business moves, what they mean by that is it is a constant revolving door of employees and making quick fixes to fill gaps and either suck it up and deal with it or move on. If you are willing to sell your soul and suck up to leadership/ drink the koolaid you may have the opportunity to move up. Management does not support the staff at all. You are expected to keep your head down and not speak up. It's a lot of playing of favorites, what one employee can get away with others get reprimanded for it. Total bonus to the employees who are related to someone in management or senior leadership as they can pretty much do as they please. When you attempt to go above direct management regarding issues whether that be a senior leader, or HR you are immediately brushed off, or if addressed forget any type of confidentiality or anonymity which results in a retaliation. You are worked like a dog and will not receive any support or help and are severely underpaid. Forget taking a break, in order to even try and and attempt to complete your work you are expected to work through them. The bad mouthing of management about other leaders or employees and inappropriate conversations of management had is unreal. Its like high school.

    Advice to Management

You need to do a major evaluation and overhaul of senior management. Time work is time paid. If your management cannot handle situations employees taking a sick day or PTO, they should not be contacting them on their time off. If proper hand off of work or communication of outstanding items was not handled properly by that employee, address that with them upon their return to work while they are on the clock and utilize it as a coaching opportunity instead of harassing employees on their time off. Train your management how to communicate and identify different communication styles. Not everyone responds to the same type of communication or micromanagement. Stop putting people in positions they shouldnt be in as a quick fix because of your high turn over. Invest in hiring the right people for the right job. There is a lot of untapped talent within the building and you need to work on motivating and empowering your lower level employees and listen to their concern. Teach your managers to LEAD to bark orders and set unrealistic goals and expectations. You have a high turn over for a reason do something about it
