I have been working at APCO Worldwide full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Incredibly smart people with interesting and impressive backgrounds - Awesome new office space in DC - Pizza and beer happy hour every Thursday - Very flat organization-- opportunities to be challenged and step up into leadership roles, especially for mid-level staff - I heard this depends on the team, but a lot of interaction with and support from your manager

    Cons

    - Don't expect anyone you talk to (even people in the industry) to know what APCO is. The company just doesn't have a good name for itself despite all the good work. - Long hours and pretty low pay compared to the competitors, which can lead to tension and poor morale. - The billable hour either works for you and keeps you on track or totally burns you out. It is not for everyone and there is a lot of focus... right now at APCO on maintaining high utilization and being 100 percent billable. - Despite the fact that most staff are generally very friendly, you can expect a lack of hellos, smiles, and lots of cold stares and judgmental looks from certain teams. - The management and senior leadership are trying to be more transparent about the direction of the company, but it ends up being a lot of vague and watered down business jargon that doesn't tell people much.

    Advice to Management

Instead of focusing so heavily on utilization and billing, take a better look at senior staff who are supposed to have great connections, but are just not bringing in new business effectively-- there are plenty of them on more than one team. They're the ones who are overpaid and are not working until midnight like the junior and mid level staff. Junior and mid level staff put up with a lot and bear the brunt of... a lot of crappy work-- pay them more.

  5. "Full-time employee"

I have been working at APCO Worldwide full-time

    Pros

APCO offers access to senior leaders who are very knowledgeable and experienced in their fields. There's a great emphasis on having an entrepreneurial, go-getter attitude and actively seek out opportunities. The firm values creativity and collaboration, which is clear in many of its accounts and the work that it does. People here work hard and deliver great work to clients.

    Cons

It's low pay and long hours. Very little diversity.

I worked at APCO Worldwide full-time

    Pros

People at APCO are generally really smart and hardworking; you'll have the chance to work with colleagues of all levels who have already done and will go on to do greats things in their careers. I worked in the D.C. office for three years and made great friends I'm still in touch with. Since the office and company as a whole are in a majorly transitional period, there are opportunities to help shape the culture and... evolve your role according to what you want to do (but it's not necessarily easy to - see below). If they get senior management in order over the next few years (assuming the CEO will retire soon), I think the company could turn around but it will be a long and painful process.

    Cons

APCO is a very frustrating place - it's similar to other agencies in terms of low pay and long hours but APCO is independent and family run and there is zero transparency about what's going on, which has been especially damaging during this period of change. In 2013-14 there were many layoffs, lots of restructuring, rumors of office closures, loss/shrinkage of major accounts, etc. and we were all left guessing (and... panicking) about all of this. Management has acknowledged that people are frustrated by this but nothing was ever really done while I was there to change it, and people just continued to leave the company constantly. In terms of structure, APCO likes to hire people without defined roles and responsibilities, and you'll quickly learn that you're expected to flounder and figure it out on your own, often without an engaged/helpful manager. APCO disguises this as an "entrepreneurial spirit" where you can pave your own way but in reality, it's a big unstructured mess that's especially hard for young people to deal with (which is why turnover is out of control). The reviews and raises situation is equally as frustrating, with people working regular 60 hour work weeks and not seeing fair compensation (reviews are a joke and everyone's basically given the same raise - although they're supposedly changing the system in 2015). And meanwhile there are people who have been there forever sliding along and not pulling their weight but because of the "family" mentality, they won't be let go.

I worked at APCO Worldwide full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Senior staff are some of the best in the business -Good industry reputation -Interesting projects and client work

    Cons

-Low pay for the industry -High turnover as junior staff get their experience and leave to go to competitors who pay a livable wage -Low morale amongst employees -Long hours, no overtime pay, no bonuses, no appreciation from senior staff -No corporate culture (perhaps due to such high turnover)- resembles the low points of "Devil wears Prada" if you're an intern or junior staffer. -Very few people progress with... this company

    Advice to Management

Show greater appreciation to junior staff and pay them accordingly. The junior staff are the worker bees and foundation to this company- without them you can't function. You lose too much great talent because they feel unappreciated, overworked, and underpaid. They go elsewhere, not because they don't like APCO but because they get treated better and have more opportunities elsewhere. There is a big feeling of... "US" and "THEM" which should be addressed.

I worked at APCO Worldwide for less than a year

    Pros

    - Excellent client roster - Opportunity to work on amazing projects - Fast-paced, constantly challenging and rewarding - The Internship program is one of the best - well-structured and allows interns to showcase their learnings through a pitch competition where they get to meet top execs - Regular brownbag lunches so interns are exposed to and can interact with top management

    Cons

    - Long hours may be required - The fast pace obviously leads to the machine not being as well-oiled at times

    Advice to Management

Two thumbs up. Keep growing the internship program, it's a great opportunity to find great full-time hires.
