I worked at ARCO full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Young demographic, fun people to work with. PMs have full control of their projects

    Cons

ARCO has strict guidelines for PMs but doesn’t do the best job of training new hires to follow the guidelines. You will work long hours 50-60+

    Advice to Management

Slow the grown to promote more intimate new hire and on-the-job training

I have been working at ARCO

    Pros

The work at ARCO is challenging. You will be forced to be efficient with your time in order to accomplish tasks in a quick and thorough manner. As a result, you will have a lot of responsibility and highly respected as an intern.

    Cons

There aren't really cons to working at ARCO. The work is challenging, requires critical thinking, and often times you will have to work long hours. However, this is to be expected in any part of the construction industry.

"It's like running your own company"

I have been working at ARCO full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Running your own company = financial success based on merit / results, lots of control with little micromanagement, flexible operating procedures. This job is for the top 1-2%. Everyone that works here is very talented and the standard is high. It is great to be surround with such high level individuals and it only makes you better. It is like interviewing with FBI in order to get a job. Once you are here, be... ready to manage a huge operation and huge budget and achieve results. If successful, you will be greatly rewarded though the bonus program, corporate benefits, sabbatical program, and profit sharing. Design/Build is a thousand times better than Plan/Spec construction. You are a builder rather than a manager. "What is the solution?" rather than "Who's fault is it?". The superintendents are true builders not baby sitters. Most of the work is repeat customers and/or negotiated. ARCO is not a low margin, hard bid contractor. The company culture is very good. The people here are all really cool including upper management.

    Cons

Running your own company = long hours, high stress, high pressure, sink or swim, small safety net. This is not a job where you are a member of a 10 man project team. At the end of the day, every task, issue, relationship, etc. is in your lap. The pressure is 24/7 and it can really build up on you. Many years with this high of pressure and stress can really wear on your soul. Only 2 weeks vacation / year for... the first 5 years. Most modern, forward thinking companies such as ARCO give 3 weeks.

    Advice to Management

Do not forget your roots as a Project Manager and do not forget how time consuming and stressful the day to day grind is running projects. Make sure proper support is in place so PM's do not get overwhelmed. I.e. administrative assistants, interns, involved regional managers. Encourage time off and vacations so that PM's can have a chance to reset and escape the pressure a little.

I have been working at ARCO full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Entrepreneurial spirited company. Culture build on merit rather than "time". Opportunities for growth are amazing. Company is exploding in terms of growth across all ten offices with plans to open more. Employer who truly values their people and doesn't cut corners in terns of quality. Core values include doing the right, and being positive, upbeat and most importantly having fun! Company offers a unique 30-day... sabbatical program for every five years of employment in addition to your vacation time.

    Cons

This industry as a whole can demand long hours -- thankfully at ARCO, employees take some time to have fun and are fully supported by their leadership.

    Advice to Management

Continue to measure success based on results rather than on effort and time spent.
