I have been working at ARRIS full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, most people are pretty easy to get along with. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

Very focused on commodity hardware so it's not ideal for a software person. There's not enough innovation as most of the technology comes from suppliers.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on software and innovation. Eliminate excess 'middle management' and let the engineers have more freedom to push ahead.

    Pros

Upper management open to new ideas. You can make a difference, and grow up professionally.
    Nice working environment in Arris

    Cons

On several occasions you don't get the resources you need to success in your project.
A lot of politics in mid management level

    Advice to Management

    Continue encouraging new ideas.
But also balance the effect that permanent changes of direction can have in the employees involved

    Pros

Great camaraderie among the people who work there. Great work/life balance. Excellent benefits.

    Cons

Once Arris purchased it's last company it's culture changed and senior management didn't care. Employees became not as important as trying to make money. Management is either clueless or just doesn't care.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to your employees.

    I worked at ARRIS full-time

    Pros

A LOT of good engineering talent.

    Cons

Over-worked engineers. Raises were never in-line with work performed.

I have been working at ARRIS full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good returns on equity investment. Flexible work schedule. Above average pay. Investments in Development have finally commenced and look to be bringing a potentially bright future.

    Cons

Could use more mentors for middle managers.

    Advice to Management

Implement a more supportive mentoring plan for the middle managers.

    Pros

Good talented people make you motivated to work. You WILL have a life apart from work

    Cons

Mid-west-like conservative company, perks are limited, work culture is pretty much non-existent

    Advice to Management

At least make the bay-area offices more like actual bay-area work places

I have been working at ARRIS full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    work-life balance is good here.

    Cons

Like other reviewers mentioned, this company doesn't develop employees. This has a lot to do with the poor middle management (ie., Director, Sr. Director, and even VP) who are lack of leadership and direction. You could be told to do one thing and the decision was flipped in the next 20 minutes because another Sr. manager truncates the decision and your manager has no clue what his/her earlier instruction was.. they don't bother to explain you the changes either, because you are just a working bee here while they are not.

    Advice to Management

Learn to be a leader and care for your employee's career development rather than step up by using your staff's good performance

  10. "Good Tech Writing Team"

Current Contractor - Technical Writer in Beaverton, OR

I have been working at ARRIS as a contractor

    Pros

I found my direct manager to be rational, capable and decent. I found my colleagues were for the most part, capable, friendly, coorperative, appreciative, and made me feel like part of their team. I was given leeway to explore new tools and propose new approaches.

    Cons

As a contractor, it was a great job, no complaints

    Advice to Management

None, I had little involvement with management above my direct manager, who seemed smart and capable.

I have been working at ARRIS full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There is a good work life balance at this company which is great and a lot of the employees are great.

    Cons

There is not an opportunity for career growth here. Also, all decisions must be made at the senior level, giving mid and lower level employees no real authority, and thus lack of motivation.

    Advice to Management

More transparency and better communication. With the company getting larger, it needs to stop acting like a small startup and more like a larger organization, it needs to empower more members of the organization.
