    Advice to Management

My opening here is Asm America was a mistake in my career. That’s not to say that everything is bad about this company but the bad for sure outweighs the good here. The laboratory environment is fast paced, chaotic, unorganized and fully disconnected from management for the daily activities in terms of challenges people have there. There are many meetings that openly discuss all these topics and plans are laid out... but nothing ever seems to change. The same inefficiencies get replicated day in and day out. Even when systems are presented to management it is a struggle to advance any type of protocols here because they are simply close minded or be don’t have the time to address these lower level issues that equate to big failures in execution. The sky is falling every day at ASM and everything is ASAP just to learn the next day its not after all. This company is trying to gain traction in the marketplace against its competitors and basically blames the lower-level employees when it really is top down failures in management starting with the director there. They claim layoffs are over when they keep repeating themselves and then called re-organization. When a company goes through so many re-organizations the question is, does this place even know what they are doing? I myself was a laid off employee but at least I got a few years in. The bad taste in my mouth was coming on board and seeing employees under a year let go just due to re-organization. This place left a bad taste in my mouth because this is a higher level degree required position where people leave other companies to join ASM, prosper and make ASM a better place. Many false promises over and over and over. This place would pretty much tank if Microsoft was not ever invented because they have no internal databases other than shared files etc. so that wheel gets reinvented pretty much every year there in terms of equipment engineering standpoint. As far as safety goes the head of the safety department does a really good job but it all boils down to who you were working with and there is no consequences ever for doing the wrong thing procedurally speaking. And when there are no write ups it’s basically the wild west when it comes to safety. That being said also because they don’t know what is going on for the most part it’s fairly easy to exploit their weakness in terms of their policies taking breaks leaving coming on time is not a factor on a day today basis. ASM does operate on the honor system which is a plus because at that employment level and the higher level issues are usually the most important were lower level issues are not even brought up. The People are typically great and usually have the same connection with each other in terms of being unhappy and knocking the way the place is run. You are forced to work weekends without a shift premium. And then asked to work on holidays and shut downs are basically the normal. Got a surgery scheduled? You may or may not be approved to take care of your own health. If you work in the lab he will spend about 20% of your day just looking for tools and supplies nothing is organized. I could go on and on here......Ending statement, if you’re out of work this is a great job, but if you are currently employed and thinking this place is better? You might be making a huge mistake switching. Rethink is highly recommended. DONT DO IT!

I have been working at ASM International NV full-time

    Pros

Reasonable work-life balance for a mid size company

    Cons

Small company with a big company overhead

    Advice to Management

Wasting a lot of resources by trying to implementing expensive S&P 500 size company's infrastructure when AMS is a mid-cap company.

    Pros

Nice people. Lots of travel if you want it. Some days are laid back and are fun. Depends on what team you are on

    Cons

Management distant and hard to impress. If you go above and beyond it is viewed as just doing your job.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to your team and understand what their goals are. Help them build a career not just perform a job

    Pros

Good company with innovation gene, plays in niche thin film market, trying to grow.

    Cons

Lots of unprofessional people & managers, lack of teamwork skills across company, insulting colleagues or, walking out of a meeting upset is considered OK, very unprofessional culture, environment of mistrust and non-cooperation.

    Advice to Management

Improve team work across the company and organizations. HR should invest heavily in soft skills for the employees.

    Pros

    Starting pay, ........manage..nope.....upper manage...nope, Pay rais...nope,

    Cons

Pay raises are for the birds, if you consider the scraps they give us pay raises. Management is something to be wanted. You bust your arss, have no recognition unless you are a friends with management. Good Ol' Boy Club is in full effect here. Was told upon hiring the only way to get a decent pay raise is to leave the company and that is completely true. Company culture is such of the mentality you are going do... this and that for us and don't expect something in return. If you do expect something bend over and assume the position.

    Advice to Management

Could be a good company if you start respecting and showing that to your workers. Take care of your people, these slaves (FSE's) are working for unruly customers and don't need your BS added to it. They are already the bottom of the barrel and don't need to have that added upon by your crap .

I have been working at ASM International NV full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Some very smart and knowledgeable engineers work across the company.

    Cons

Forget striving for a work life balance. A lot of finger pointing occurs in an attempt to justify why deliverables are not being met. No planning and no software development processes exist. Engineers are silo'ed creating a non-collaborative environment.
