I have been working at ASM International NV for less than a year

    Pros

My coworkers are great people. I thoroughly enjoy working with them.

    Cons

There is a large contingent of people that have been with the company for a long time. These people have been stuck in their ways and obviously, this is hard to break. Any new people that join the company soon assimilate and nothing changes.

    Advice to Management

Every process should be reviewed for efficiency and cost savings. No stone should be left unturned. Look for every little way that things could improve. Listen to the people to glean ideas for change. They are frustrated and know how to fix it.

I worked at ASM International NV full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Company provided good hands on training on tool sets along with a great benefit package and comparable salary in the semiconductor field.

    Cons

Cost reduction due to loss sales of equipment created unstable job security.

    Advice to Management

    Improve equipment sales to customers.

I have been working at ASM International NV

    Pros

ASM is a great place to work. The people are hard working and good people. The work is challenging and rewarding.

    Cons

ASM isn't an easy place to work. The bar is high and we are constantly being pushed to accomplish more. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but you have to want to work in a fast paced dynamic environment.

    Advice to Management

Focus on business critical projects in order to help the employees correctly prioritize their projects and workload.

I have been working at ASM International NV full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Lots of pros here, lots of freedom in the technical sense where you can learn and demonstrate your full abilities. There are really no rules in terms of limitations on how far you want to push yourself they will for sure not stop you from over achieving. Some flexibility in schedule but pressure always there is your a tool owner. Its nice to be trusted to for your time worked with out punching a clock. Its also nice... not having a badge number. You do feel human here completely. The people and their resolve is usually top notch, every one really is so good that the competitiveness comes out in meetings and lots to learn from all.

    Cons

Lots of cons here also..the work flow is so un managed that is basically a nightmare. From hour to hour you will have sometimes no idea where the next number one priority will come from and its already a week behind. There are no LAB guidelines at all to refer to, there are vender manuals but mostly do not apply to the type environment this is so everyone does things a little different. ASM jobs are for sure... venerable. If your not in the right group, the right cliché or in the right direction for profit, you could be jobless soon. ASM does not try to find you work with in the company. Also they do not completely stand behind their words at times. Email only system used for everything, very tough to manage issues with only email. Very very disorganized and no tools for your job. You need to hunt for every single thing you need pretty much every day.

    Advice to Management

Walk in your employees shoes for at least one day per month or quarter, then you can understand. Start providing employees with what they need to do their job. And listen more.

    Pros

Good working environment, and nice peers.

    Cons

Mangers decision making has cost me my job.

    Advice to Management

Review the decision top mangers make to help the way the company is running, so customers won't reject contract.

I worked at ASM International NV full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Some really smart engineers and good people.

    Cons

Same smart engineers stifled by ruthless and self-serving politicians. New upper management bullies people, takes advice from the wrong side.

    Advice to Management

No need. They won't take any, at least not from the right people, who have the company's best interest at heart.

    Pros

Great company structure main corporate offices in the Netherlands. ASM always offered the best pay and benefits I ever have received. The health insurance packages were excellent. Performance reviews were annual and on time. Work environment is excellent! Glass Blowers were allowed to flex their artistry somewhat in the fabrication of high performance quartz glass products.

I worked at ASM International NV full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Wonderful, brilliant people work at ASMA!

    Cons

Strategic planning does not involve all employees. Constantly changing objectives which reflects the reactive not proactive culture of the company. No one can seem to make a decision in a timely manner.

    Advice to Management

Set clear objectives by identifying the 3 most important objectives of the company. Have everyone derive their objectives based upon this. Then drive the company through sound decision making to achieve excellence.

I worked at ASM International NV full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Everybody I worked with was easy to get along with. Ideas where taken seriously and input was always appreciated. The managers I worked for very fair and accommodating. Employees weren't expected to put in unnecessarily long hours just for the sake of warming a chair like some companies expect.

    Cons

Initial training upon joining the company was not very good. A lot of things seemed a little haphazard and ad hoc. Intranet system was a pain to use often.

    Advice to Management

Develop a better training system for new employees. Engineers were often sent to customer sites with very little training and seemed to be expected to pick things up while working on customer tools. A dedicated training tool in the demo lab would be extremely helpful if the space could be spared.
