I have been working at AT&T as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are a lot of social and professional events for interns to attend, and you get a lot of opportunities for self advancement and improvement

    Cons

No VPN access for interns so you can't work from home, and the company doesn't help pay for living expenses

    Advice to Management

It would be nice to get some information on what we will be working on before the first day so it's not too overwhelming

I have been working at AT&T full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, the 401k plan matches up to 6% of contributions. The people I work with are genuine, and I made friends quickly. There will always be work for AT&T. The job security is par none and the employees are well aware of that.

    Cons

Culture is extremely conservative, do not work here if you believe a single bit of liberal or progressive ideology. The office is cramped and the overhead lights are blinding, and apparently turning them off is an "OSHA violation" despite it being lit adequately by the light coming in through the windows. The infrastructure is a disaster, code is sloppy and a bear to refactor or even make much sense of. Only a fraction of new developments in deployment and automation technology has been taken advantage of, but the majority of it is not allowed because management has a problem with us implementing technology solutions that other companies offer when we can "do it ourselves", hence AT&T lacks any eCRM whatsoever. The IT department has been outsourced to IBM, and working with the majority of that staff, who will ignore you and not deliver then turn around and ask you for more money, is beyond frustrating. If you work a position like this at AT&T, be prepared to deal with the immense amount of stress that comes along with it. Poor methodologies, unrealistic deadlines, and an uncooperative IT department take the normal stresses of software engineering and architecture to a whole new level.

    Advice to Management

Take advantage of software such as EasyCRM to streamline your business and take some of the development and capital load off of the backs of your employees who have more important problems to address then simply compensating for lack of technology.

I have been working at AT&T full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Getting to develop an exciting new platform.
Freedom to speak your mind and raise issues.

    Cons

Switch to agile software development has been very painful.
Communication is awful. One group asks you to do one thing and praises you for it, another group freaks out when you do that thing.
    Lots of in-fighting.
    Company is way too large.
Leadership refuses to fire some terrible engineer contractors despite them bringing down entire teams.

    Advice to Management

    Fire the lazy people.
Bring some order to the chaos.
    Improve focus and communication.
Don't overlook good employees on bad teams.

I have been working at AT&T as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Its a job that pays the bills and that is about all I can say about this company. I honestly cannot think of any other Pros for working here.

    Cons

Working in a windowless building is depressing. Working in areas I am not trained in is frustrating, yet they continually try to make me do things I am not qualified to do and they just call it a challenge.

AT&T contractors do not get PTO or Sick Days or Holidays. Yet we do the exact same work as employees and work the same hours. As a contractor with AT&T you must accept the fact that your contract can be eliminated with very little notice.

    Advice to Management

Treat your contractors like employees! Advertise positions correctly based on what the worker will be actually doing. Managers need to work on location so that they are accessible...manager that work remote are respected less.
