    Pros

    Pay/bonus, flexibility, benefits, Learning Assets

    Cons

Silo'd. Empire Building. Everything is about CYA. President (of business unit) through AVP level are the 'frozen middle' and incapable of translating a great passion and vision for the business by our CEO & Chairman into anything actionable. Everything is Lost in Translation. Takes 6 month increments to move any kind of needle and more like 3-5 years to implement anything (by that time it's already changed). Little internal job movement based on your desire, more based on the constant organization changes. It is not the job of the supervervisor to grow their people but instead to simply manage vs. lead. There's a rough guide of having a minimum of 10 direct reports for each supervisor due to that fact. They have quarterly surplusses (aka 'You're fired') with know feeling of security for anyone.
I'm not even sure what the culture and values are (yes, there is a powerpoint that state the vague concepts).

    I worked at AT&T full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company strives for high standard in leadership. Expectations at each level extremely high. If you make it as a Director here, it means that your scope and span of work is huge. A director here can have as much challenge and responsibility as VPs or SVPs in other companies. Same for higher levels. Att is really a lean company for senior management and has few leadership opportunities.

    Cons

The culture is so old fashioned, they are trying their best, but it is hard to move a company with hundreds of years in existence. There are a lot of Christians who happen to be leaders in the company and tell others their religion views and conservative notions. Beware. if you happen to be progressive or liberal. Promotions are hard to come by and they pay so little!!!. I know because I worked in HR and know how they compare with other companies. Very inflexible, change takes a long time. And for all the development stuff that they have, I wasn't impressed with their talent level. because talented people will leave a cheap and boring company.

    Advice to Management

If you really want change and innovation, you should be open to other ways of doing things, please don't make the same mistakes you did with DIRECTVs acquisition with Time Warner. Your inflexible and cost leadership way of doing things will not translate well in the entertainment business.

I worked at AT&T as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Great working environment. Plenty of free coffee & tea.

    Cons

Way too many contractors. Contractors get treated like 2nd class. Lack of technical depth. Decision making without solid technical understanding of impacting decisions. Lack leadership with real "engineering" backgrounds. Having a software development background is not equivalent to having prior experience working at real engineering firms producing products and having an ABET accredited engineering degree. Experience & academic training trumps all. It was tough having to work as a contractor and being challenged by leadership that was extremely technically incompetent.

    Advice to Management

Treat contractors better, covert more (faster), and hire people that have strong technical backgrounds for leadership positions.
