I have been working at AT&T full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good people, systematic approach to design, testing and implementation. Room for new ideas

    Cons

Too many meetings, some friction between teams. People step on each other sometimes, try to take your idea and credit

    Advice to Management

Give flexibility to your employees and see the magic.

I have been working at AT&T full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

AT&T truly cares about its employees and tries to retain and develop them. They make every effort to find new opportunities for dedicated employees when job shifts occur. Technologically they are reinventing themselves as a software company. A great place to work that still values commitments employees have made over time, and I say this as a relatively new hire.

    Cons

Like any big company, there are challenges with a complex organization . Some inefficiencies result.

    Advice to Management

Keep pushing forward and recognize that we won't get where we want to be overnight, but we will get there.

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at AT&T (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Stimulating colleagues provide an atmosphere that promotes technical growth.
Both formal and informal training opportunities exist for those interested in career enhancement.

    Cons

The current year (2017) is one of many organizational changes due to company acquisitions. Business and technical practices need to be aligned, and there is some concern about redundancies between AT&T and the acquired businesses.

Technical development is usually done by third-party contract companies, with testing, oversight, and management performed by in-house employees, most recently using and AGILE framework. This is a 'con' only if you want a lot of hands-on development work.

    Advice to Management

If you are a manager responsible for remote employees, due your utmost to keep them closely aligned with team efforts and activity. Collaboration via web-based teleconferencing can become a stale experience.

    Pros

This is a very forward thinking company that is constantly retooling their employees for the future.

    Cons

Requires constant training, so you will need to put in the extra time.

    Advice to Management

Focus on migrating customers to new technology.

    Pros

100% match of first 6% 401k contribution. Company seems to hit bonus targets, so you can "expect" to receive your bonus. Low-to-medium work load, ability to telecommute from home. Discounted Internet, TV, phone, cell service--50% off.

    Cons

Tough to get promoted working remotely.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Working in AT&T Labs in San Ramon and other locations such as Austin, Redmond, Atlanta, Middletown requires a hands-on skillset and knowledge in networking and test equipment. My role in the Lab provides the ability to thoroughly learn networking equipment when evaluating in the Lab. Transmission technologies evaluated range from RF signals at changing frequency bands, optical fiber testing, conducted wireline testing for rate and reach.

    Cons

Schedules and timelines can be tight requiring very busy weeks.

    Advice to Management

Recruit from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for students with hands-on, experimental skills to quickly be impactful in AT&T Labs. We have 3 engineers who graduated from Cal Poly SLO and we need more with forecast workload.

    Pros

    Great training, and awesome benifits

    Cons

Hold or handle time, as they call it. Everyone is supposed to make the customer not call back in a 24 hour period.

    Advice to Management

Don't make the call center tech people ask if there is anything else we can help with. That make's for a longer call.

    I have been working at AT&T full-time

    Pros

People are friendly and you have good work/life balance.

    Cons

If you are looking for growth, this is not a company to be. You will mostly be working with mediocre software engineers and some people who can only talk powerpoint. Nepotism is rampant. Some how there is no conflict of interest even if your relative works in same division.
