I worked at AT&T full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They pay well and good benefits

    Cons

Awful awful awful management, from the very top to the department directors. Nobody has a clue how to manage anything at all. The Labs are gone. They used to be the crown jewel of the company. They have completely destroyed the Labs in the last 5 years. I doesn't exist anymore. I would suggest getting a job in TX, cause that is where all employees will be in 5 years. They won't be in NJ anymore. Count on it. Constant...

I worked at AT&T full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company pays reasonably well if you enjoy fighting corporate political battles. If you get in the right group, you can also remain hidden and work on your own projects without much interference.

    Cons

I worked at Bell Labs for half a decade, what once was one of the innovation centers in the US. No more. The current leadership of AT&T (which is really SBC) gives lip service to innovation while laying off the scientists literally responsible for the Internet today. I did not witness anyone working on interesting software projects or research problems at AT&T today. You will only be happy if you enjoy helping accountants...

    Advice to Management

Be afraid. You are destroying what once was a great company and turned it into an investment vehicle. Those of us who actually believe in innovating and making the world a better place for consumers are will prevail in the end.

I have been working at AT&T full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Compensation and benefits are good.

    Cons

Don't come to work here. Go to Yahoo. Go to Google. Go to Facebook. Go to Microsoft. Upper management has destroyed all morale by constantly reorganizing and closing offices. Nobody seems to have any clue what they are doing. My boss retired very early at 55. Many long-time people who used to love working here have left last year for other jobs at the companies listed above. That tells you something right there. A lot...

    Advice to Management

None of you have any clue how to lead an organization. You destroyed the Labs and you took away all morale and you are trying to get it back by taking away offices and micro-managing. The Workplace 2020 thing and forced collaboration is a joke. Doesn't work and it won't work. The best ideas always came from two people working late at night in a Lab, not forcing people together in a room with a telepresence and demanding...

good salary, good benefits, good savings plan, good retirement package, masters degree, long career, interesting and rewarding technical problems to solve, close to home, telecommuting allowed, good computer and network support

    Cons

overly complex development process encumbering the real work of software development, controlling senior management. impromptu budget cuts disrupt work schedules

    Advice to Management

trust folks to do work, less administrivia, less process constraints, more work directly with customers to expedite needs and delivery

I have been working at AT&T full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

AT&T is a stable company that has a very formal culture. Pace is fast but you can choose to work a reasonable number of hours. They compensate with satisfactory pay and added potential bonus which is small but better than nothing.

    Cons

Leadership is benefits are worse than average. There is not a lot of growth opportunity unless you live in Atlanta, Georgia or Dallas, Texas (headquarters).

    Advice to Management

Work on leadership and growth for people. Stop cutting insignificant costs such as no water cooler that reduces employee moral.
