I have been working at AT&T full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Decent benefits- that’s about it

    Cons

HORRIBLE COMPANY! Constant layoffs! Management has also restricted Telecommuting. Employees used to be able to work from home all the time- now it is limited to
4 times a month. Impossible to find workspace at corporate locations- everything is “drop in” and you need to haul all your stuff into the office daily. Long hours and absolutely NO WORK LIFE BALANCE. Management does not care that you have a life outside of “the Death Star”. Try to leave or work from home with a sick kid, and you get written up! And I am a high level IT professional.

    Advice to Management

IT employees need the flexibility you once gave us. We have ZERO WORK LIFE BALANCE. Over time, the best and brightest WILL LEAVE ATT. My coworkers and I are all just marking time. Waiting for the surplus and package- at which time we will take our talents elsewhere. ATT will be left only with the employees on the right side of the bell curve who are nowhere approaching top
Talent if they don’t change the culture DRASTICALLY TO BE MORE EMPLOYEE DRIVEN!

I worked at AT&T as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Big company has lots of money and can pay good contract rates
Longer workflow processes inherent in larger companies means more red tape and with that is the added benefit of more time to complete tasks.
Good work/life balance as timelines are realistic
Very good infrastructure in place and lots of support people to assist you.
They allow a lot of remote work from home.
Many experienced hires work here, colleagues are mostly mature, tactful. and polite. There are always exceptions to this.

    Cons

They furlough you whenever they want, right before Christmas for example.
You can be furloughed for a month, a week, days... whenever they want, without pay.
They can make you take mandatory days off without much notice, hurting your paycheck significantly and turning your personal budget into a train wreck.
You will never speak to upper management, they are way far removed and do not communicate down to subordinates. This means they are making decisions without any input from the team whose paychecks they are approving. This makes you feel straight up like a number or a cog in a wheel. Individual contribution doesn't seem recognized at all, as the wheel is too big. I only ever got to speak to one level up from me, my immediate manager. Upper mgmt rules with an iron fist. They make sweeping changes without regard to anyone, the only thing that matters is money. Projects will get funded in a wave and then unfunded like a rug getting pulled out. Department team meetings are a one-way communication top-down format discussion of a higher level manager plan that is too far removed from your day to day tasks to provide any cohesion to the corporate vision as they leave you with no action items and there is never any two-way communication involved. Instead you feel perpetually stuck under the "glass floor" running the engines as the managers walk above you in segregated factions deciding your career fate by a set of rules you are not privy to.

    Advice to Management

Do a better job of getting feedback from the team and linked your day to day world view with the day-to-day responsibilities of your team.

Are you the one doing all of the talking in your meetings ? If so you need to be asking questions of your team and letting them tell you whats going on in the day to day.
