      Great Company

      Pros

Awesome work life balance. Great pay. My team is great and have an awesome manager. I could not be happier with the job.

      Cons

Senior management is too harsh at times. The company is an older demographic. I wish there were more company events.

XL Used to be a great place to work

Oct 8, 2020 - Senior Underwriter in New York, NY

      Pros

      - Some good and decent people who have integrity - Work from home flexibility depending on manager

      Cons

      - Minimal investment in resources to get the job done - High expectations but a lack approach from management to actually achieve these goals - Senior management is out of touch and are either ignorant or turning a blind eye to the frustrations of the employees who are actually doing the work - Multiple re-orgs that are not fully fleshed out and that don't address the issues - More and more authority is being taken away from the field, creating in more levels of approval and sign off without the resources to make that process smooth - Culture has taken a huge downturn after multiple mergers. Identity has been lost.

      Avoid at all cost

      Pros

Location is good. Co-workers were ok. There is a 20 word minimum on pros, but unfortunately, I can't think of one at the moment. Salary was ok.

      Cons

Executive Staff sucked. HR is not for the employee; especially when complaints are made. Diversity training is mandatory as is harassment training - but the company does not stand by it's teachings. Senior management goes unsupervised.

Stayed too long and saw the under belly of a once great company

      Mar 2, 2016 - Senior Underwriter

      Pros

      - Generous vacation from the start so good work-life balance - Benefits are pretty good - very nice 401k match. - Grab that PPO/non HSA while you can. - Senior management make themselves available. - Some amazingly knowledgable and experienced underwriters. - Collaboration is encouraged - just as long as you understand it will need a lot of reciprocal back scratching

      Cons

      - Can't decide who it wants to be. Hired all these managers from Zurich, then from Ace, now post-merger, it's like the Frankenstein of insurance. - No longer any dedicated focus, and confusion among middle management on what they are trying to achieve. Very curious decisions made among the underwriting management - no underwriter has any actual authority to quote anything. It all needs a home office approval. That's just nuts, insulting to the UWs and very ineffectual. - Weird dual matrix reporting structure so you end up having two bosses, not one, and neither knows what the other is doing. And that's worldwide. - Renegade middle management - can't go threatening to fire staff without cause, but they do it anyway. Anyone heard of constructive dismissal? - Clueless HR so-called specialists who really let the company down in how they handle personnel. Heard multiple stories of people having interviews and then never getting a call back to be put of their misery.

      Unbelievable but it is true

      Pros

Good benefits Cafeteria Co-workers worked well together and supported each other Some of the managers are nice Good location Good company I would recommend people to work there but not for 2 units in the company

      Cons

I worked at XL for years in various sectors of the company. Never in my life did I ever think I would be a victim of such a horrific experience as I did in my last years with the company. My direct manager was filled with hate toward individuals she managed, was extremely controlling, micromanaged to the point that it caused interference with production, lied to keep us from doing things that the rest of the company was allowed to do like work from home, held information back, sought managerial advice from lower level staff, had lower level staff perform managerial duties, was able to mentally push nerve wracked people out the door, turned Senior Management against us too, and Senior Management also said inappropriate things to us too. The staff was so upset, everyone was taking anxiety pills to survive. Human Resources became aware and did nothing about it. We all worked hard, we all tried our best, but we were treated with cruelty and hate. How this continues and managers like this are not fired is beyond me.

      Horrible place to work

      Pros

I seriously am unable to think of one right now. Beginning of my career was good....Toward the end, very disillusioned.

      Cons

Too much butt kissing, not enough recognition of work actually accomplished. Senior managagement goes unsupervised, unchallenged and retaliation for complaints is high. Learning curve is zero and the bonus system is based on if they like you (even though they say it's performanced based.) There is very definately a line between the cans and the cannnots. There is very definitely a line between what is allowed and what isn't, ESPECIALLY from senior management to their staff.

This place needs a wake up call - it's a disaster

      Pros

Was formerly a great place to work. Flexibility with working from home. Some of the people are nice to work with.

      Cons

Since the "merger" everything is just terrible. During the peak of the merger they would hold town halls and assure people there were not going to be anymore layoffs, and then the following week more people would be let go. The Atlanta location is almost dead - before the merger we filled two full floors, now we barely fit 25% of one floor. There is so much red tape in this company that nothing productive will ever Almost all employees now are contractors and/or in India. The only full time employees left are management, everyone else is a contractor or in India. Senior management is running this place into the ground and key people are leaving. Shame on the executives for what they have done to this company, especially in the IT department. Just to get access for an employee now takes weeks, because the service now platform is complete garbage. Contractors are treated poorly, and have no care about the company. The are held to extremely strict SLAs and that's all the care about.

      Pros

ability to control your career path; great fellow employees; fair salaries and supper bonuses.

      Cons

iffy former senior management. Thankfully they have passed on. Rough time with current financial ratings although there is tons of money in the bank! Seems all a waste of time.

Ethically Challenged HR Leadership and Apathetic Culture

Apr 6, 2018 - Manager in New York, NY
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Work life balance Decent vacation allowance Unlimited sick time Gym reimbursement (less than $200 a year) Day of Giving - day off to do charity work with coworkers

      Cons

HR leaders are an incompetent, underqualified clique, who have been promoted into positions for political reasons--not because they have exemplary knowledge, skills or abilities. Projects that would benefit the company and improve efficiency go nowhere because the leaders in HR take no action and do no support meaningful change. You end up spinning your wheels working on initiatives that never come to fruition. HR Leaders and Senior Management make unethical and legally questionable decisions to appease business line managers. This is a dead end job. Anyone who works here will be bored and seriously frustrated. Unless you like the feeling of getting nothing accomplished, and no one caring about making things better, don't take a job here.

      Cons

IT and operations should be more supportive and aware of the needs of each business unit.
