I have been working at AbbVie full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

work/life balance, innovative therapies to millions of patients globally, smart colleagues, internal mobility is encouraged, profit-sharing, high margin business, free shuttles, subsidized healthy food options, decent vacation/paid time off, top global pharma company with strong financial results/fundamentals and strong therapies/pipeline of medicines in areas of unmet need

    Cons

Large corporate politics, difficult to move up if not part of a formal "career development program" or very well connected with senior leadership (through mentoring), some nepotism exists particularly in career development programs, given organization's size, work can be highly specialized and siloed depending on group/department, only 1 formal performance review per year, very far from downtown Chicago, flexibility to work from home varies by department/group and manager, some of Abbott's legacy culture still remains (if it's not broken don't fix it mentality), innovation isn't encouraged or rewarded equally in all departments, some main buildings lack a gym facility,

    Advice to Management

Improve performance evaluation transparency by adding at least one formal written mid-year review so that employees can improve where needed and enhance their career growth while adding value to the company/increasing efficiency. Accelerate career growth of high performers despite not being in a formal development program or being mentored by senior leadership to progress (i.e. reward performance not connections). Improve diversity in recruiting (i.e. minorities, diversify target schools, not just the same schools that leadership or their children attended). Encourage/incentivize innovation in all areas to improve as a whole. Incentivize innovation and team-work, not just on paper, but by rewarding employees who demonstrate these attributes through results. Do not promote to management those who are strong individual contributors, but lack or have not demonstrated leadership skills. Some managers lack people/management skills, emotional intelligence, empathy, and desire/interest to develop others or work collaboratively. Live out the "All for One AbbVie" motto and don't promote those who are clearly only looking out for their own benefit at the expense of the team. Reward efficiency and improvement, not just face-time and "hard work" that is inefficient.
