    Pros

Abbott has great benefits, very competitive salary and bonus plan. Plenty of opportunity to move within the organization if you are willing to relocate.

    Cons

Some of the older management is very mid-western; corporate is in Chicago and they seem to have a hard time changing to adapt to the West Coast way of managing. Behind the times in that aspect. Not good about work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Allow and trust workers more to lead meetings and empower them. Learn to adapt to Silicon Valley way of thinking and allow telecommuting...focus more on the work getting done rather than just presence in the office.

I worked at Abbott Diabetes Care full-time

    Pros

-Some very talented people in lower to mid-level roles
-Exposure to diversified US and International business

    Cons

-A very toxic blame-based culture driven by senior management, very similar to working in a sweatshop. The best day here will be your last day as you watch it get smaller in your rearview mirror as you drive away for the final time.

    Advice to Management

Sell it to another company that knows how to treat adults like adults.

I worked at Abbott Diabetes Care full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits if you can manage to stay for ten years.

    Cons

The working environment is very poor. Moral is awful, productivity is very low, and it is a CYA environment.

    Advice to Management

Try treating your employees as a valuable resource.

I worked at Abbott Diabetes Care full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible schedules and great benefits! Opportunities to move up the ladder. Great food at the cafeteria. Lots of training classes to gain or improve skills.

    Cons

Management is not very accessible. Lots of travel time. Cubicles are very confining and mundane. Very little interaction with other departments.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your employees more and recognize hard work.

I worked at Abbott Diabetes Care full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Very good salary and benefits

    Cons

After multiple rounds of layoffs remaining workforce is stretched to get work done (e.g. not good for work/life balance.) Culture of fear in that if you don't put out over and above effort your job may be cut. Strategy changes often so must be willing and able to change gears and not get to see the fruits of your labors of implementing last month's strategy. Very hard to get things done due to legal, regulatory, and funding approvals and understaffing in support groups. Lots of employees end up going out on medical leave…..stress-related?

    Advice to Management

Show genuine appreciation and caring for individuals, treat them like people. Find out from mid to lower managers what's happening vs hearing filtered version from senior managers ("yes" men.)

I have been working at Abbott Diabetes Care full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working here will give you exposure to medical devices and allow for decent work life balance. It is one of the few companies that still offer a pension. Relaxed environment however, this also hampers efficiency and efficacy.

    Cons

Politics, unfair hiring practices, no accountability for senior management. Hierarchical, no real development pathways just ride the coattails of whomever has the most influence. Tend to be on the low end for compensation in the Bay area.

    Advice to Management

Revamp, clean house. Change the culture, be transparent about promotions and growth opportunities. If people are not performing or require development they should know prior to the year-end review. VPs should rotate divisions every 5 years to continue to churn the culture and promote development from the top down.
