I worked at Abbott Labs full-time

    Pros

being part of Abbott equals great benefits

    Cons

horrible new management that barks at you like you're an idiot, while program progress remains the same, push away great talent and keeps Jerks with their arms crossed all day. few great people to work with.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the silent ones. Valuable company assets (the ones that get work done) typically avoid politics and aren't replaced easily.

I worked at Abbott Labs as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

There a significant number of people there that really care.

    Cons

Leadership in their technology department lacks the ability to provide vision, cohesion, and overall sentiment toward her peers or subordinates. It's amazing that an organization so large can let such lackluster leadership exist at the CXX level. Absolutely amazing.

If there is such a thing as the boys club Abbott has created the girls club and it is evident.

    Advice to Management

Get new leadership at the helm of your technology division. While not a significant spend your BU's depend on the technology and are in constant darkness regarding the impacts she creates. You can do a lot better.

Your leadership under your CXX is too afraid to bring on new talent because of the atmosphere and the word is getting out that your culture is a cancer...you would do well to stay clear of of this organization.

    Pros

Cool co-workers and team I was a part of.

    Cons

Upper Management is typical for a large company. Morons. Clueless. Abbott itself sucks. The layoff like crazy and send jobs overseas. I understand everyone hates their job at Abbott in Temecula. Glad I left when I did.

    Advice to Management

    Yeah right.

I have been working at Abbott Labs (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Medisense used to be a great company to work for, was a people company with great benefits, great work environment and great people! When Abbott brought Medisense out, they continued with the Medisense values, but it soon changed!!!

    Cons

A lot of the production managers are out for themselves, and don't care who they tread on to get themselves noticed. They have no respect for their employees, even the ones who have been working there long term (10years plus). They supposedly have a whistle blowing policy, which is totally ignored when a complaint against management is made!! Investigation only involves interviewing the manager involved, and it is their word against yours!! HR are supposed to be impartial, but are known to side with management, which is why people are not whistle blowing, because they know what the outcome will be....and they are scared. They would rather be treated like crap!!!

    Advice to Management

Treat people as they deserve to be treated, especially those with a lot more knowledge. These people will get you where you want to go, there is no need to tread all over them for your own development!

I worked at Abbott Labs full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The other engineers were, for the most part, friendly in regards to non-work topics, eating lunch together, etc.

    Cons

Worst company I've ever worked for. If you are a competent engineer, LOOK ELSEWHERE.
Management is not competent. They do not report issues up the chain so that the teams can work together to find solutions. Instead, they spend all their time finger pointing and trying to see how they can blame someone else. Morale is terrible, probably because this same finger pointing is pushed onto engineers. As an engineer, you don't want to collaborate or work together -- you want to say " my stuff works and yours doesn't so its not my fault". And the issues are not hard, technical issues -- if engineers, software, and test ever decided to put again their pointing fingers and come together, they could easily solve the issues with the product and get it out the door. This doesn't even touch on how messed up doc control is or how the quality and doc control get to dictate engineering practice instead of the engineers.

    Advice to Management

    Quit playing the blame game.
Stand up to doc control and quality and make engineering figure out best engineering policy and practice.
Get Software out of their Silo so that they have a stake in the game and are held accountable to the quality and milestones of the products.
Get everyone to throw their egos out the window and work together as a team!

I worked at Abbott Labs full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Most of the people are great, it's an established company name, employee benefits are good, diversity encouraged and the company history once fantastic

    Cons

Top heavy company. Any position and department that can be outsourced will be (overseas) - but more management positions are becoming available.

    Advice to Management

Care about the employees. The letters from customers decorating the buildings and appearance of the grounds look nice, but in reality are very fake in comparison to how the company operates. Non-management employees really have turned into "just a number".

I have been working at Abbott Labs full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

the only reason I have managed to stay 2 years at abbot vascular in Santa Clara, CA is my coworkers.

    Cons

Extremely top heavy. in RA organization of 40+, there are 9 directors!!! 3 left last year and only one was replaced. So yes there were 12 at one point. Last year we had 15 employees leave due to work stress. Management did not blink an eye. Handful contractors were hired and left due to poor treatment. They rather start out with new contractor vs hiring the existing ones. Maybe 4-5 permanent people were hired to fill those positions. We are told to be lean! the worker bees are expected to work 12-14 hour days because we're a global company. And if you want a promotion in 2-3 years you need to put in overtime and you might just get it. Yet compensation is at least 10-15% less than other companies.
There is also a lot of outsourcing. IT is mostly gone, you deal with people in India who are not trained properly to do their job. Clinical has been outsourced to a CRO. There is one person left in doc control! Business slows because of broken systems and lack of proper resources.

    Advice to Management

Treat your remaining workers with respect and provide them opportunities to grow. Otherwise you will have a 40%+ turnover rate and difficulty filling positions. People have no loyalty to company that treats them like dirt.

    Pros

    Great benefits and 401l. etc...

    Cons

Treated like a tagged animal. Upper IT Mgmt is horrible!! Greedy, lack of it knowledge, demanding, and no consideration for their employees to say the least.
We were outsourced to a company based out of India strictly so upper mgmt. is able to achieve bigger APEX bonus's.

    Advice to Management

    WAKE UP!!!!!!
