    Pros

Very flexible with individual employee needs. Many times I have witnessed employees faced with challenges that might have been problematic in most companies. Abbott works with employees willing to help themselves to find the right niche, have adequate time to get through tough situations, that sort of thing.
Abbott takes an active interest in providing a positive atmosphere with an emphasis on integrity, working conditions, and opportunity for advancement. In the race between the tortoise and the hare, Abbott is the tortoise. A little slower, a little more conservative, but steady, determined, and in the end it succeeds. Most people I know who have left say the atmosphere was better at Abbott than at their new company.

    Cons

The pay is not at all comparable to that available at similar companies. On the upside, it is a very stable company. Northern Illinois is one of the most tedious places in the U.S. Think you might commute from Chicago! Ha! You're looking at commute times of at least 2 hours one way at rush hour. The alternative is to live in any number of dull suburbs that offer little or nothing other than developments. There is virtually no culture within commuting distance. So you have a dilemma - a horrific commute or complete boredom. Also, if you are an outdoors person who likes anything other than boating and fishing you will find yourself with little to interest you.

    Advice to Management

Try to get salaries a little more in line with those of competitors so we are not training as many workers who will eventually leave for competitors with skills they developed on Abbott's budget.

    Pros

Great culture, Good place to learn people skills, great benefits, good brand name, Stable job usually, great work-life balance (one of the best you will ever find). A few years here will get you many friends that could be resources for life. Great place for minorities as well. They have an onsite daycare and a good community.

    Cons

The work sometimes gets slow as you wait for other departments to give you some deliverable. You could end up with a bad team or a not-so-good manager and that could affect your overall performance, reputation etc. The key is to learn to manage expectations and people (even your superiors). A confident person is seen as a leader and that's what you need to blaze your own path through the company. Many stalwarts work here. You need to identify them and once you work with them, you will be taken up in the organization, provided you have what it takes to perform well.

    Advice to Management

Take time to listen to your direct reports and their direct reports. There is some free-riding that takes place in some departments. Make sure you know the actual source of a good piece of work (and not assuming that your direct report is responsible for it). Conduct more training sessions in MS office suite because many people spend too much time on simple stuff, they can be more efficient that way. Recruit hi performance people from other organizations, because they will bring about a culture change in your department. To do this, ensure the new recruits have the personality to influence others ever so slightly and sincerely. This can go a long way in improving performance. Good luck.

    Pros

Abbott has a long history of providing quality pharmaceuticals and medical products. I have always believed that I am selling the best product in my market, which makes it much easier to sell. Abbott takes a very conservative approach to promotion and interpretation of PHARMA guidelines. We are given a lot of training on appropriate promotion. Abbott provides some benefits that many companies don't, like a pension plan and profit sharing in addition to a 401K. When my personal circumstances have required me to move Abbott has always found me a job in my new hometown. Abbott also does a great job of keeping employees even when drugs go generic or sales forces get downsized. I don't know anyone who's actually been laid off from Abbott, they always get placed in a new position. So overall, great benefits, job security and a great products to sell. That's why I've been with Abbott so long.

    Cons

Abbott's technology is sometimes outdated by the time it gets rolled out to the field. Implementing new systems is slow, and some of the current systems were never any good (like OMEGA, the sample management portal). Some things that seem like simple fixes are never going to get changed because someone's pride or their entire career is entwined with a certain software program or report. Abbott is conservative with buying new data or new technology.

    Advice to Management

Please keep doing what you're doing to make Abbott a leader in the global pharmaceutical markets and keep our company strong.

    Pros

Abbott has a strong philosophy of work-life balance that shows in both policy and practice. There is also a strong culture of promotion from within, and with such a large and diverse company, there are always new career paths to pursue.

    Cons

Abbott has a somewhat "plodding" mentality where change does not come quickly or easily. The high rate of internal promotion tends to limit the amount of new ideas introduced from people with experience in other companies or industries.

    Advice to Management

The focus on the our pipeline is clear and evident. It is great to see a management team so keen to invest in projects that won't show returns for at least 10 years, well beyond the scope of next year's bonuses!

    Pros

Abbott is a stable company that provides opportunities for those that seek it. The management team is strong, knowledgeable and can be great mentors to the employees. In addition, there are a lot of networking opportunities through organizations (Women, minorities, Toastmasters, etc.)

    Cons

Since Abbott is a large company, it may be difficult for those new to the company to adjust to the culture and learn the relationships to make.

    Advice to Management

Provide more communication on the status & direction of the department, division and company.

    Pros

Abbott is an employer that values its workers, patients, and stakehodlers it serves. At the undegraduate and graduate level, Abbott has management development programs in the ares of HR, Finance, Marketing, Science, and research. While it is hard to generalize about Abbott, due to its size, I would say that most individuals are go getters. We have many individuals with Top 20 MBAs all over the company.

Abbott's diverse businesses do give ample opportunity for career movement. Also, opportunities working abroad are available.

    Cons

If its size is a plus, it can be a downside too. Many times it is hard to get things done with multiple layers. However, Abbott does realize this and attempts to eliminate red tape. It is a far commute from Chicago if you live in the city. Pay is not on scale with other pharma or companies in the Northern Burbs considerdering its great benefits package and overall benefits

    Advice to Management

Focus on identifying those that make a difference and bring them towards the top. Eliminate the culture of needing sales experience.

    - Company has a strong track record of success
     - Many opportunities across businesses and geographies
     - Strong compensation package
     - Bright co-workers, who are genuinely fun to be around

    Cons

    - Large company, so it comes with a level of bureaucracy
     - Intense focus on achieving near-term financial commitments can trump long-term thinking

    Advice to Management

As I read through the reviews here, it's evident to me that in a company of this size, with as many different businesses and geographic locations, that it's impossible to generalize about the company. So my advice to anyone reading the reviews and thinking of Abbott as a prospective employer is to be careful about reading too much into any one review, be it positive or negative. There are vastly different cultures across this company of 75,000 employees, and particularly since many people joined Abbott through acquisitions of other companies, each retaining pieces of their own culture. Even within a certain area, an especially good or bad manager or co-worker can make a huge difference. So do yourself a favor and don't spend too much time concerned with such broad reviews of the company.

    Pros

The environment was less stressful than many of my peers described at their respective companies. There was also an annual profit sharing check right before Christmas! One of few companies to have 401K and Pension Plans.

    Cons

Salaries were conservative in comparison to some other companies in industry.
